OBD1 PCM interchange/compatibility, 5.2 vs 5.9

-
Just a thought, but why not run the 5.9 long block with the 5.2 intake/electronics? I don't think it will make it run poorly, and I've heard of many people running stock/very mild 5.9s on 5.2 computers. I have a mild 5.9 running on a 5.2 computer, but it has been tunes via SCT Flash which you unfortunately don't have that option unless you swap to OBD2.

Mine is mild but I would not call it very mild. EQ heads, Mopars R/T+10 cam kit, 1.7 Harland sharps, M-1, 52mm fastman, 24lb injectors, Gibson shorties. It is at the limit for what the PCM can handle though. There is no difference between the kegger intake on the 5.2 and the 5.9. I have never run into anything that the PCM cannot handle besides camshaft. I have an old 210x cam that I put in when I put the motor together but the computer could not manage it. Hence the mopar cam kit on the recommendation of the tech line at Mopar Perf. back in the day. Like I said for being OBD1 I think I have squeezed about all the juice out of her. I plan on a Holley sniper system with a carb version of the M-1 for the next bullet.

Right, the intake isn't different but your 5.2 injectors are different and your '91 uses the return style fuel system. I missed the part about the engine work, my bad. Honestly, with all the work done to the engine, if I were you I'd probably swap to OBD2 or use the Sniper system. You could also do a Megasquirt or some standalone efi system.

As far as idle control goes, a dirty coolant sensor connector of a crappy ground will cause idle to glitch too. Not everyone has an old scan tool or an mds to monitor whats going on. Just like setting base timing.

i dont think i would worry about a 5.9 in place of a 5.2 as far as ecm goes. Or is it sbec? Been a long time since i had to troubleshoot a 90s 318.

Not trying to be a dick buddy but my "91" would be running a throttle body injection setup. 92 was the first year of the Magnum. My 95 is returnless. Your dead on on the injectors though, use the 5.9 injectors. The 5.9 has a 190k on it now and is getting a little long in the tooth. The Sniper setup will be going on after the stroker build.

Could be that RammerJammer75 got you mixed up with me.

I do have a ‘91 Dakota with the TBI 318 that I am (slowly) working on converting to a Magnum 5.9 and I posted a couple of comment earlier in the thread about what I’ve discovered about the convention.

I messed up, I keep thinking '91 was the first 5.2 mag and 92 the 5.9, but it was 92 & 93 respectively. Also, my first post was to the OP in regard to his issues.

No, I was actually speaking to the OP first. I just got a year ahead of the Magnum release lol

I would be interested to hear more. I am on the fence about building a stroker or slapping and turbo on my mild 5.9.

Took a minute and swapped to the PCM from the Dakota (believed to be '92 5.2, but no sticker), truck starts and idles fine. Maybe even cleaner than with the 5.9 ECM. Didn't test fuel pressure yet, yardwork to do before the weather goes to crap again.

Oh I wouldn't bother even trying a stroker motor or turbo anymore on the obd1. Just to many better options now. Holley, fast, megasquirt, exc. But on bolt on stuff, go to town. My Dakota has run a best ever of 13.8 but I am convinced if i could have afforded the heads i wanted at the time of the build the obd1 could have carried it into the 12's. For a pickup i drove daily and gets 18mpg in 2004. Plenty good for me.
