The local track has started up this class and been running it for the last few years. Not alot of cars, but I like the concept. Not seen a Mopar yet though...

My question is, based on the following, how would you build an A- body to compete in this class? Engine(big block or small block), trans, rear, suspension, fuel system etc..... Car should be competive and reliable and able to win. Should be set up to run in the 1/8th mile. I believe they are currently running in the low to mid 6's.

Forgive me for the lonngggggg post.

Rules for OEM Street Class -

Purpose:
To establish a class using small (10.5” wide) tires which allows an economical yet very competitive level of drag racing. Rule structure is intended to ensure fair and open competition for all American car makes while maintaining costs. Class rules allow one small power adder coupled with a limited cylinder head and OEM block ensuring parts breakage is minimized. This in turn will ensure car counts are greater and more consistent. Also this class will allow track managers/promoters to plan definitively ensuring events stay on schedule and are entertaining for the spectators.

Engine Sizes/Weight Breaks:
Big Block – 416 cubic inches in displacement (cid) minimum and 480 cid maximum, 3500 lbs minimum car and driver weight. Engines larger than 480 cid will not be allowed to compete.

Small Block
– 367 cid minimum and 415 cid maximum, 3100 lbs minimum car and driver.
Any OEM carburetor or similar to Holley 750 CFM rated carburetor with restrictions.

Micro Block – No cid minimum and 366 cid maximum, 2800 lb minimum car and driver. Any OEM carburetor or similar to Holley 650 CFM rated carburetor with restrictions.

See General Rules - Driveline for specifics
Note - Factory "Big Blocks" must compete at Big Block weight despite the actual displacement. Examples include but are not imited to 396-454 CID "Big Block" Chevrolet, 348-409 CID "W" Chevrolet, 429-460 CID "Big Block" Ford, "FE" Ford, "RB" 413/426W/440 CID Dodge/Chrysler

Competition Ladder

Each event will include two (2) rounds of qualifying unless unforseen circumstances. Each competitor is required to make at least one qualifying run. Competitor cannot use a qualifying run from a previous event to make the field. Elapsed time from qualifying will determine competition ladder. Quickest 8 will compete. If times are identical them miles per hour will be used as a tie breaker. #1 quickest qualifier will run #5, #2 will run #6 and so on. Quickest competition will have lane choice determined by most recent run. Depending on car count, a second class of 8 competitors may be fielded and will be laddered as above separate from the Quick 8.

Bye Runs

If a qualified competitor cannot make the call for the next round of competition, a Competition Bye Run will result. If the number of qualified competitors results in an odd number then bye run will be awarded to the quickest qualifier. Other bye runs will be awarded to the competitor with the quickest elapsed time from the previous round.

Dominating Performance Clause
The car and driver that wins more than three events in any single season will be considered as having dominating performance. A weight penalty will be imposed for that car and driver. The car with driver will be required to weigh-in at a minimum of 100 additional pounds to the weight breaks cited above. The car with dominating performance will be required to run heavy for one year from the date of the third win. Weight penalty will carry over between racing seasons.

Points

One point will be awarded for each round of competition won. Competitor with the most points at the end of the season will be crowned Champion. Runner-up will also be recognized. In the case of a tie, number of event wins will be considered. Each event win is worth one point. The next tie breaker will be quickest ET in competition during the year.

Rules Committee

Rules Committee shall consist of three members in good standing. Committee will be responsible for establishing, maintaining and enforcing the Class rules, collecting, managing and distributing the funds (including payouts), maintaining member roster, and dispute resolution. Rules Committee may ask membership for assistance in deciding future action and direction. Decisions by the Rules Committee will be final. Class members in good standing will be able to cast one vote during elections. Date and time of elections will be determined. Elected Committee members agree to serve for at least one year. If one member of the rules committee cannot serve the one year term, a special election will be held to determine a replacement. Committee will decide on a chairperson. The rules contained herein will remain unchanged for 3 calendar years after first official event.
Members

Competitors (and car owners if different) must be members before competitor and car will be allowed to compete. Competitor will be considered members if annual dies are paid in full by established deadlines. New members can join at any time during the year.

Members in Good Standing

Members will be considered in good standing if 1) annual dues are paid in full; 2) member is not serving a penalty for rule infraction, protest dispute or for one year from refusal of claimer clause and; 3) Competitor has actually qualified a car in at least one OEM Street event during the previous calendar year.

Dues
Annual dues are $100 per year per car. If car owner is different than competitor then car owner shall pay membership dues. No Refunds. Annual dues are in addition to event entry fees. Competitors can join and compete after first event by paying the $100 membership dues. Dues will not carry over between calendar years.

Entry Fees

Entry Fees are $50 per event plus any entry/gate fee imposed by the host facility.

Payouts

Payouts will be determined prior to each race and will be posted on the OEM Street web site as soon as possible.

Schedule

A Racign schedule with start times and locations will be determined and posted as soon as possible.

Rules Review

Rules will be in effect for three racing seasons after the first official event. Committee will review and revise as needed at that time..

Technical Inspection

All cars, safety equipment and driver’s licenses will be subject to inspection at any time. Be prepared to allow access to carburetor venturis, valve train, spark plugs, etc. Also engine could be “pumped” during pre race inspection to determine cubic inch displacement and thus weight breaks. Post race inspection: Winner and runner-up will be prepared to remove 1 spark plug, loosen valve train and cycle engine to determine engine displacement. Failure to satisfy this requirement will result in forfeiture of payout and points for the event. Winner point and payout will be awarded to the last opponent; opponent payout will not be awarded.

Protests

Only specifically stated rules herein can be protested. Protestant can only be a competitor from the qualified field of the event. A $300 protest fee will be paid by the protestant, $100 of which goes to the OEM Street Organization. The protest is required to be filed with the Committee at or before the final round of eliminations or before protested competitor/car departs the event. Protest will be honored after the event is completed. If protested car or engine is found in violation of the rules herein, the guilty competitor will forfeit all prize winnings for that event and the accrued points for that season. Winner point and payout will be awarded to the last opponent; opponent payout will not be awarded. If protest is proved true through inspection or admission, $200 will be refunded to the protestant. If protest is found false then protested competitor receives $200. Teardown if necessary is required immediately following the event. Untimely response by protested competitor will result in assumption of guilt and resulting penalties. Guilty competitor will be required to change the illegal component and demonstrate rules complaiance at next event.

Liability

Each competitor is responsible for his or her own family members, crew members, guests, equipment, car, trailer, tow vehicle, tools, parts, etc. Organizers and host track are not responsible for accidents, damages theft or loss.

Claimer Clause
Engines, less accessories (starter, distributor, carburetor, nitrous plate, water pump, headers), can be claimed. Claimant can only be a competitor from the top 4 of the qualified field of the event. A $6000 cash claimer fee along with the intent to claim will be presented to a member of the Rules Committee. Rules Committee member will present the claimer fee and the intent to claim to the owner (Claim-ee) of the claimed engine. If the Claim-ee refuses to relinquish engine then he/she will forfeit all prize winnings for that event and the accrured points for that season. Also Claim-ee will not be eligible to compete in future OEM Street Class events for one year from the date of claim. Claimer must present the fee and his/her intent to claim as soon as possible but before Claim-ee departs the event. Claimer must provide tools, hoist, labor, equipment, drain pans, etc for complete removal of engine. Untimely response by Claim-ee will result in stated penalties. Rules Committee is not responsible for damage surffered during a claim. Claimer must clean up the resulting fluids/spills to the satisfaction of the rules committee.

Umm, unless you've got some very deep pockets, I'd stay away. Its a neat idea, but the rules are too loose. They're going to make the class more expensive rather than cheaper.

What's the prize money? Not that it matters. With heads-up, there's always some yokel who'll spend 10K on an engine to win a jacket.

That class is going to go much faster than that in short order. I'll bet you could run mid 6s without porting on a junkyard engine. I can't believe they're running a 10" tire for 1/8 mile racing? Seems like all that stuff around here uses an 8" mandate. Traction will never be an issue with that gigantic tire.

The claim is way too high. Because they dont want to tech it, there aren't any rules limiting what you can do to the bottom end (cut up cranks, crazy light rods, gas ported pistons, etc)

If someone put a gun to my head and made me run it...

Id go with the micro block combo. Always always go with the lightest combo, especially if you can run the same heads either way. Besides, that makes the "domination" penalty that much less meaningful.

Probably a 5.9 Magnum engine, or maybe a regular 360 with 308 heads (beehive springs with tool steel retainers. Good porting, Hollow stem valves, etc) . Nitrous needs exhaust flow. Get the crank polished and edged, coatings everywhere (lots of short block options here), custom pistons probably gas ported, total seals, get an expensive oil pan, custom cam from Bullet Cams. Victor intake. Quickfuel or Pro Systems carb. You have to be careful with rings. Theres lots of power there, but they can make the motor show bigger than it really is when being pumped. Another thing to watch here is if you use a 16V system. The faster crank actually makes it show bigger too. Electric water pump. Id probably still run an alternator even though the rules don't require it.

904 with all the tricks. Ultimate Converter spec'd for motor combo.

Cal-tracs/mono leafs either 8.75 or Dana, though IMO you're better off with the 8.75 for quick ratio changes. 4.56 or some equally ridiculous gear, depending on what the cam will turn.

Spend a lot of time getting the car light. Get the fiberglass that they allow. Gut all the street equipment, etc. Tiny little radiator. The goal is to get the thing as light as humanly possible within the rules and add ballast back if you manage to get it under the minimum. You'll need a weight box at least for when the scale inevitably reads out of whack, or when you need your 100 pound weight adder.

Money money money money. I don't think I'd spend that much with these guys that clearly don't know how to write rules.

I don't know if you'd be competitive long term or not, but you should be able to run way faster than mid 6's in the 1/8th.

Thanks for your input, LXguy. I apreciate it. I have never raced in a class with rules like this before and was not sure about it all.

To me, it doesnt sound that bad. Or that expensive....but like I said, I'm not that educated in class racing..... It seems to me that it would be in the same price range as how I would have built a drag car any how. BUt, as noted Iam ignorant to what it takes to drag race. I understand that writing on paper is not the same as actually building the car and having it go rounds.

I looked at some of my old pics from a year or so ago and the guy that won was running a 6.20's in a late 80's camero with a small block

I was thinking of a 474 big block in a 71 dart..... with the cal-tracs 4.56 spool...

But thinking gets me into trouble.

Building the combination in your head is the best part, and its free! it goes downhill after that.

Its always more expensive per second of ET to build a car to rules than it is to just build it the way you want.

For example, think about how much it costs for a *good* set of big block heads. I guarantee you'll have more money in porting, valve job, springs, etc. on a set of junky stock heads to race that class, and your car will be slower than if you had just bought the good heads in the first place.

I see why there aren't any Mopars... can't run a stock stroke 340 with the rules they are.
