Oil Leak Small block 360

-
best way to learn is to screw it up once
kind of like the best way to remember your wifes birthday is to forget it...just once is all it takes

you'd be surprised how many of us keep lists of what parts came from what car just so we know what to ask for when we do need something

I'm running a 76 360 in my 71 duster, with a rear end from a 68 dart
if I need from brake parts, I need them for "a 71 duster"
if I need rear brake parts, I need them for "a 71 duster"

you just got to keep track of what section your working on

HAHA I cant forget my wifes birthday she will kill me. New oil pan should be here tomorrow. That's what my friend told me with the mistake. Thanks for the help I really do appreciate it.

no problem man

its such a simple issue you had, and considering how many other parts interchange between the 318 and the 360, I can see how easy it was to make the mistake you made
I guess you just got to pay some tuition...and next time someone has this problem you can come along side and help them

Totally agree with diymirage. Learning the hard way is always effective; painful and embarrassing, but effective.

Curious question. What torque converter are you going to be using? The one from the 318 or the one from the 360? I'm asking this because if there is an oil pan mismatch, is there also going to be a torque converter mismatch?

heeeeey, good catch young grasshopper
that will need some attention if the OP wants to keep his fillings

you have the wrong oil pan brother

your rear main seal is probably good, because it was the right one for the 360 engine wasn't it?

so get a new pan, and get a oilpan gasket kit for a 360 and you should be frying tires in no time
So i got an oil pan for the 360 and it wont fit over the oil pump. Am i missing something?

are you still using the pickup that came with the engine?
the pickup and pan need to be matched
a truck has a rear sump pan and pickup
a car has a center sump pan and pickup
and a van has a front sump pan and pickup

the oilpump interchanges, as long as you make sure you get the right pickup

(just read your using one from a 318)
how does it interfere?
does it hit the bottom of the pan square on?
any chance it just got cockeyed?

as long as it is a center sump pickup on there (and your pan is centersump too, correct?)
it should fit just fine

got any pics?

I dont have any pics. I changed the pickup tube from the truck to the car. I changed the oil pans from the rear sump to center sump. The 360 oil pan is hanging up on the oil pump.

man, your just not having a good time with this

when you say "hanging up" does the pickup catch the baffle welded into the oilpan?
if that's the case, maybe you can push the pan up and slide it into place (if you can imagine what I mean)
or does the pan go on, but the pickup is too far down and the pan is teetertottering on it?

and you are sure you don't have the pan on backwards, right?

with too shallow, you mean the pickup is not close to the bottom of the pan, instead it is hitting the underside of the baffle?

I would almost just tell you to bend it down (that's what I would do)

but without seeing it, and the streak of bad luck you're on...

Your not kidding either. Its like the oil pump is also to shallow.

the oil pumps carries over between all the LA small blocks
that should not be an issue
(is it the one that came with the 360, or did you buy a new one? if it is new, and you still have the stocker it wouldn't hurt to compare them)

do you have a partnumber for the pickup?

I didnt change the pump. I did change the oil pickup tube.

no, but if you remember where you bought it, they might be able to look it up for you
(I'm sure the box is long gone)

I'm very tempted to say bend it down a little but without seeing it...I just don't know
