Putting a '68 Valiant 225 into a '64 Dart. Do I need to save the pan off of the '64 225 or can I just pitch the engine?

Keep the pan, pickup, dipstick, and dipstick tube from the '64 since they changed in '67 and the newer oil pan hits the K member before the mounts line up.

Had this problem putting a '67 Valiant 225 in a '61 Valiant.....hit the k member.
Put an '80 Volare 225 in and had NO problem

When I found the car, it had been sitting in a pasture since '88. The engine was locked up and the dipstick was rusty and the oil was watery goo.
I just drained the pan and got 2 gal of antifreeze out of it. the pick up is rusty, but I can't imagine it's any different than the '68 unit.......anyone care to chime in?

Grumps is right the pickup is different. It sits in a different spot as the deep area of the pan is not the same. Hold the old and new up and look at the units side by side.

PS save the timing cover and the aluminum rear seal bracket(with its screws) for me I can use them.

The bottom of the pickup was rusted through with small pinholes. side by side they are different, the '64 sits closer towards the rear of the sump, the '68 sits in the center...(see pics)

They both had about 1/4" clearance from the bottom.
I called Melling's tech line again and they found a tsb from when they cancelled the early pickup. It superseded the early number to the later one. The only problem I can see is in some EXTREME acceleration, you'd want it farther back.
Here you can see where they were both sitting;
'68 pan (look at all the goo!!)

'64 pan. (see the clean spot?)

Would have been when they changed pans in 67. You can make anything work, however I would look for and early pick-up if it were my money.
