I’m interested in the real mopar gurus opinions on which carburetor to put on my 1965 Plymouth Barracuda 273 dual exhaust.
I’ve got it down to 2 different ones.
1: Holley 80457s 4 barrel # 4160 600cfm
2: Edelbrock 1905 AVS 2 4 barrel 650cfm.
I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to carburetors so am asking for help, again. it’s going on a Edelbrock D4B intake
Thank you for your input it means a lot

Who decides who are the guru's ?? Either carb will work. AVS has made a lot of people happy, but as a shade tree mechanic and not a self-proclaimed guru, how the carb is set up and tuned will be more important than which carb you select.

Well, to me and my mechanical abilities, everyone on here is to me a guru!!
I did put a Holley 2300 350cfm on my slant6 1972 Dart Swinger with hardly any issues at all and tuned that up to run fine. I’m just trying to cover all bases with some opinions

If you have auto trans 600cfm with vacuum secondaries , hooked up . FYI , the factory 4bbl had small primaries and secondaries for good throttle response . One step up is a 625cfm which will give you a little more . I wouldn't go any larger than 650 . A 650 will likely bog from a stop . Bigger isn't better .

Automatic transmission I have
I’ll look into a 625cfm as well
Thank you

The AVS would get my vote, another one to look at would be a Street Demon. Both have an infinitely adjustable vacuum valve on the mechanical secondary so you won't get a bog. I am not a Holley fan, been there and done that.

Isn’t the street demon A Holley?

I have had several small cfm holleys (two oem under 600 cfm on small block fords) and i wasnt impressed. I would try the avs 2, because of the annular discharge boosters. I remember reading a test that showed an amazing low -end torque boost from that style booster.
For a much more "built" engine, a holley d.p. is my choice. (Actually, i would buy a quick fuel brawler).

Looking more and more for the AVS2

Differences?

I would use either the AVS or the Street Demon. Their small primaries will equate to more crisp acceleration and better fuel mileage.

Screw the mileage lol

Ok, then put the Holley on it and lose some bottom end snappy. All four of the throttle bores on the Holley are the same size. That will probably be a little rich for the 273 and it will fall off some right off idle compared to the other two. It's not my car so I don't give a crap. You did ask for opinions and that's mine. Good luck!

You can also see if Summit has a factory second or reconditioned one. They're usually cheaper and come with the same warranties and whatnot. I'm a big believer in ordering from Summit as their customer service is second to none...
If you don't like the fiddle with the carburetor the secondary door is set and waited on the Edelbrock 1406... just another thing you won't have to fiddle with...
Now Rusty rat Rod 318 will run and myself would prefer the street demon or the AVS if given the choice between the three because we like to fiddle with our carburetors and try to make them better. I'm sure if 318 will run had a choice he would have a Holly anyways so it does get into preferences. But you pretty much stated you didn't want to fiddle with nothing or as little as possible...
I wouldn't doubt that you would read the instructions and do just a little bit of tuning for your specific application. But it will be mostly just the two simple screws on the front... Make sure you hook a wire that comes on when the ignition comes on having 12 full volts to the choke and you'll be off and running...

Still thinking about either the avs or a couple other choices.
Good point on the throttle bores which I didn’t think about

1406 yes, you’re right, I don’t want to fiddle too much because as I said, I ain’t that smart around carbs

Are you going to keep it a 273? If so, I would look at the Edelbrock 500. IMO, the 1406 is a little large, even considering it is the economy carburetor.

Yes Sir, I am keeping the 273 in it. I don’t have the tools OR the know how on swapping engines
