Optima battery??..

Battery in trunk means you should use some sort of 'sealed' and probably a gel cell or AGM battery unless there is a dedicated box and vent to outside.
Optima is just one of many manufacturers of such batteries.

It's unlikely the car's equipment will draw down the battery like one would do when trolling on electric power in a boat. Your ammeter will clue you in to whether this is the case. No ammeter? Then assume for now that's not the case because you've said nothing about trouble starting or eating batteries. I know for drag racing some people will purposely run on battery only. So there, maybe. Otherwise, a battery for starting is the important thing.


What we are reading on Classic's website has a big red flag that its marketing BS written by someone who has no idea.
AGM is a battery made with liquid acid in an Absorbant Glass Mat
Gel-Cell is, well, an acid in gel form.

As far as the instructions go, its a little hard to know quite what they mean.
It says charge the battery to maintain 12.84 Volts. That's different than charging at 12.84 Volts.
To reverse the chemical reaction that occurs during discharge, connect to a power source at a slightly higher voltage.
All car batteries that we use should be around 12.8 Volts when fully charged and in good condition.

I have a moroso box that is vented to the outside of the car. I do believe I have a sealed battery now but again it's been in the car for 5 years and it doesn't crank for a long time before it starts to die out. I just know it's starting to lose its zip...
Again I think my alternators around 64 amps.. I do have an electric fuel pump, electric fan, they hold nitrous setup with solenoids fuel pump and so forth... that's not even talking about the headlights and other stuff that I could possibly turn on and the idea of AC in the future... This is what's making me consider the yellow top...
 
Five years isn't that bad. I used to get Interstate's MT-34 batteries. Pay more for those than their standard line and IIRC the pro-rating was for 7 years.
Find someone with a inductive ammeter and measure how much current flowing. Then you'll know. (Be sure to subtract battery charging, if any.)
 
FWIW, I've had this SC34DM blue to top in my boat since '09 for trolling motor duty but also for starting duty last year. It was made in Mexico, I was skeptical of reviews, and the price was high so I was really hesitant to purchase at the time. I am happy with the life I've gotten of it. I would buy an Optima again when necessary.

You may want to consider installing a higher output Altenator.
I kind of covered that in an earlier post. I've looked into the higher output alternators and it seems like they really need to be at a higher RPM for that higher output... I need more amps at idle when like in traffic and the fans need to kick on or potentially in the future AC... When up to speed or up to RPMs then the fans kick off and the current alternator is putting out at 64 amps and I seem to have plenty. This is why I like the idea of the deep cycling battery to kind of keep things plenty up to power when the alternator is at idle and not putting out its Max...
 
I used the Power House 85 amp on my 416. It has electric fuel pump and a 16” electric cooling fan. Which does a good job thou it will never see A/C. Now my Dart has a red top and A/C with a factory Mopar Altenator that does a good job maintaining the battery. I think the Optima has a lot to do with it.

I had one in the Duster when it was smashed. I put it in my gas golf cart. Sits outside all year for 3 yrs now. Still works perfect. I would kill a maintenance free in on winter. This red optima works great. My son just got another one with the Run stand. I'm gonna steal it for my other golf cart.

I use optimas in most of my junk. There are specific charging instructions with a gel or agm battery. If you follow them, the batteries last a long, long time. If you buy an optima, look up optimatrays.com. Specific holders for optima batteries. They are priced fair and bad ***. My boss’ boat is 21 years old. It’s on its second set of optima blue tops.

Yea I read that, I was just so pleased with this company when I bought their battery tray I thought I’d let people know.

After having 3 Optimas fail in a 6 month period, I sold it and got a different brand.
 
I ran the same red top for 10 years. When it got tired I replaced it with a Odyssey 25-PC1400T - also an AGM. It's definitely got more meat on its bones.
 
But can you do this to your Optima? :poke::lol: (just poking fun)
