98 Durango 5.2 completely stock 170k runs good. 1976 w100 going to be automatic.
Intake / carburetor
power steering swap over?
Motor mounts swap over?
What am I going to run into fitting the trans/flex plate/torque converter/starter?
Will I be able to just drop in a LA distributor and go?
oil pan?
Obviously would love to use the air conditioning capability. (But not now)
This is my first attempt to research this kind of swap.
thank you for any and all experiences or thoughts...

  • put the LA front on the mag. LA timing chain cover, pulleys, brackets.
  • figure out what u will do for fuel pump. Hughes 20 dollar adapter? roller cam with snout? electric?
  • LA dizzy drops in.
  • Many go LA oil pan. IF u do, u need a 360 pickup truck pan
  • motor mounts should be fine
  • 318 should be fine with your LA flex plate/converter
I'm going to be doing it soon. Pretty straight forward. I've already got two cams with the fuel pump snout.

Do you think there will be a problem with just leaving the serpentine belt on? I kind of like that.

No, then u will use the Magnum front and you wouldn't need to even pull the oil pan. I don't know how that all works out with power steering, and alternator. I know the magnum water pump goes the opposite way. I also know the magnum alternator is set up to power more accessories. They also made them with out A/C, so you can buy a belt for a non AC truck. My dad bought a new Dakota in '94 without A/C, V6. Same belt.

:poke: and the roller cam won't need the extra zinc.... LOL

Crap I ment to quote ya ^^^^

It already sounds like I got to be on a mission to put one of these in there. I'm not quite convinced yet.

Well I can see this idea needs to go. It doesn't look like there's any Foolproof recipe.

My problem is I won't be able to do anything unless I know the details way. Is it to line up correctly with the timing cover? I know for a fact you would never send me the wrong way but unless I know the "why's'" of everything I'm just not confident.

Magnums have the same oil pan whether it be 5.2 or 5.9. So, if J par is going to use the LA oil pan on the magnum, it needs to be an LA 360

I was wondering almost up there was a kit if you will. One that has the crossover connections for the power steering and a crossover electrical connection for the alternator. You know stuff like that or it can just be done with a quick parts list and go. I certainly didn't want to put all my La stuff On it. I was hoping that the Durango oil pan would be fine, but I haven't looked under there to see it's configuration. This also gets a little more difficult as the Durango is running and has good tags and it's fine except for the wife crunched the front.

Again, I don't know the details for the accessories (alternator, power steering) when keeping the serpentine belt. Just remember, the water pump turns backwards on the magnum, so that matters to the fan. Many have kept the serpentine belt, but most I know run the LA front on the magnum.

Okay I just am not quite sure exactly with the oil pan deal is? I take it that the 360 pan is needed for the rear main? But I'm not sure if there's some kind of difference of front in the timing chain covers or something?

And of course, I didn't put it on the list in post #2, but you'll need a carb intake that fits the magnum to go carbureted. I bought the Eddy RPM for mine, but there are others including the Chinese knock-offs (cheaper and really haven't heard much bad about them)

Do I need to dig the Magnum timing chain out of there? Like I need to do on the LA motor.

The Durango pan might be fine in a van, but I don't know that for sure.
The vans steering assy might need specific clearance places that the Durango pan could interfere with.
My own experience tells me that vans usually have a crapload of clearance, and the motor is hung well above the steering.
Rear drive Vans also don't have a K member like what makes us change pans for fitting in the Mopar A bodies.

X2 on the specific intake for a carbed stock head Magnum because the intake bolts are straight up vertical instead of angled like the LA motors.
I have also not heard anything horrible about the Chinese air gap other than some porosity concerns, but no real proof of a problem.

Yes I already have an Edelbrock 600 good to go. And I already figured I'd have to budget 200 bucks for an intake manifold. I'm just wondering how much cobbling I'll have to do? I wanted to kind of put the LA engine in there because I had it, it's running and I figured it would be easy. If I'm going to have to do a crap ton of work to make it happen then it's kind of a wash. I wasn't really trying to get any kind of power upgrade or anything like that.

yep, correct. Magnum uses a 1 pc oil pan gasket, while as you already know the LA uses a 3 pc. But there are people right here on the FABO site that has used the mag pan with LA front.
On the camshaft, if you can find around a 1989 TBI LA motor, that cam will be roller and still have the snout for the mechanical fuel pump. Being LA in a magnum, you'll gain about .030 lift over factory
  • I have the 360 car pan/pickup tube for my mag. That was supposed to be in my '74 Duster now, however, I did the "low dollar 318" just for the newbies here on FABO.
