Picking gears

Naaaaaaaa. You have good things to say.

I could make the posts shorter by using bigger words, but then you might complain about having to bring the dictionary along.
Or I could eliminate the punctuation r drp th vwls.
Look; I'm sorry guys that I'm wordy. But that is the way my head works. I'm just glad it still works. I type it as I think it, then edit the fat-finger spelling, then reread it to make sure it says what I wanted it to say.Sometimes I re-arrange the paragraphs, for better flow. And sometimes I delete duplications or ambiguousness. So, I am trying.

Edit See what happens when I try to keep it short? The very first sentence seems to be aimed at Rumble, in an underhanded attempt at being hurtful. That was not my intent. I just meant that someone, anyone, perhaps everyone, would come down on me for the few big words I know. I guess I should have included an lol. But even that could be misinterpreted. So, to Rumble, my appologies, if I irked you.

How can anyone ignore that?
That was Great!
AJ don't listen to Rumble, he's a Character. The more you want to write the better for me. LOL Hearing from experienced people makes it happen.
Earlier on Moper completely answered my question on TC selection, but I missed it. My bad back and muscle relaxers are killing me. Race while you can. LOL
273 has one heck of a motor in a light car, that's why I posted the numbers.
Good info. here!

No no no! It was fracking GREAT!
Your awesome AJ!
Keep up the good work.
And I mean it!

AJs posts are great. And always very informative. He usually takes the time to spell out the **** that many of us (I included) can't be bothered to cause we don't wanna write another novel.

That said. If your gear ratio doesn't start with a 4, then you have a problem. It should always start with a 4.

If it's a Street Car - go with 3.55s, and get what You get, at the strip
I agree. I have 3.55s in my 375 HP 340 4 speed, and they are perfect. I had 4.56 gears in it for a while, and I did not like them. Burnouts and acceleration were great, but for all around driving, they sucked. I refused to drive on the highway for even a few miles. I don't remember the exact RPMs, but at 55 mph, the motor was screaming. Acceleration and burnouts with 3.55s are still awesome. Plus, your original post said you only planned to run it down the strip a few times.

If you got a gear vendors unit. Then your rear gear should start with a 5! lol
Well, it did for a bit; 5.13s,4.88s,4.30s,4.10s.All of those might be OK for a much smaller engine, or a better chassis. But with 3.55s I can hit 60@6400 in second-over; no stick-shift required, or 93@6100 in second-over,4 ratios with just one stick shift, or 112@6866 in third;4 ratios,2 stick shifts or 65=2236 in 4th-over;between 3 and 5 ratios ,lol.

What size tires? I should run 110 at 5700rpm with 4.10s, no OD in 3rd.

Street;85" roll-out, 295/50-15s
Track; 87" roll-out, 325/50-15 DRs

Your math won't work for me.
I get 5700=82mph with an 87" roll-out in 1.39 third gear.
I get 5700=114.5 with an 87" roll-out and direct 4th.
I get 5700=110 with an 83.55 roll-out, or 26.6 inch diameter tires.
I get 5700=110 with 90.6" roll-out in third/over (1.084), which is a 28.8" tire

Yeah I'm running 26.5 inch tires. With 1:1 on the transmission and 4:10s thats 110 mph = 5700 rpm.

Hot dayum, if I was in Canada I'd buy you a beer. Best advice I heard in a while.

For the guys who might want to do some math;
3.09 low box with a GVOD splitter, and 3.55s
the road ratios are; Gv in red
10.97-8.56-6.78-5.29-4.93-3.85.3.55-2.76
5.29 and 4.93 are too close together.Or are they? This is just 6.8%, and at 6000 this is just 408rpm between them. If I ....................naw forget it, I'm just not into 1/4 miling.

For the guys with a 2.66box and 4.30s, the road gears are;
11.44-8.21-5.98-4.30.

Doing the math; I am 4.3% short in first ratio,4.3% better in second ratio,13.4% better in the third ratio, and skipping 5.29,I am 14.7% better thru the traps. Or would be if I cared to go. That's 2 tugs and one button shift for a total of 4 ratios

With 3.55s I can pull 4 ratios in the 1/8th, burning thru the traps at 93mph=5990average rpm; 1 tug,2buttons. Shazzam!

Ha ha ha ha, he said Shazam!

Best post yet!

I like a 3.70- 3.90 gear, with a 25"-26" inch drag radial.... I went 380/360 clone, with execeptions..( EQ heads, slightly better flow, RPM Edelbrock air gap dual plane, and a wider 110 lobe center cam...
As for 273: I like a 3.91 for fun time, a 3.70 -ish gear" for everywhere... No o.d. ...overdrive...... Keep it , simple....
TUNE IT, IN.......:)

What were your times?

I ran a best of 7.27 @ 94 mph shifting at 5400 with a 5.14 gear and 30 inch tall M/T 315/60 drag radial at 2950 lbs. If I shifted any higher it would slow down. 8 in. PTC convertor. Only 1/8 mile tracks in my state.

Your 5.14 and 30s corrected to a 24" tire is equivalent to 4.11s.

I ran [email protected] with a 2.2 60 ft with 4.88s and 27.8s. My gear and tire equivalency is 4.21. I would be hoping for a 7.4 ET with a 1.7 60ft. But I was shifting at 7000, so maybe , just maybe, I was way off the power peak,lol.(230cam). It was the only successful run of 4 that I ever made. When I saw 93mph I about messed myself.
Point is,With your numbers, I can see what mightabin. So thx
