Question for yous guys. There is a fairly loud pop coming from the driver's side exhaust pipe. It only happens after the car is warmed up and only at idle or slightly above. The pop gets more frequent after I put the hammer down and then return to idle (in the stoplight relay, for example). It's not loud under the hood, only out the tailpipe and it's only ever happened on the driver's side.

Any ideas?

Spark plug fouled out and raw fuel building up in exhaust. Intake or exhaust valve not closing completely, usually you'll hear a ticking of tapping on that side of the engine. Could also be a burnt intake or exhaust valve. Perform a compression test on entire engine. Pull all plugs, carb wide open and 3-4 pulses.

Done a tune-up recently, or had any other reason that your plug wires may have gotten crossed up? That would be my first guess, and one that doesn't take any money to diagnose and correct.

Could be a small air leak in the exhaust pipe letting in fresh air that then "ignites" the hot exhaust gasses again...or you maybe running a little lean.

I had a simular problem and it turned out my convertor stall was under my cam specs.
I checked everything and everything was OK. I matched my convertor to my cam and no more exhaust popping when cruising around
Maybe I am wrong but problem went away!

Thanks for the responses everyone! I have checked the wires and they're gravy, looks like the next step will be to pull the plugs on that side and make sure they are not fouled and then run a compression test (which I am afraid to see the results of!). I'll take a look at the headers to be sure they are not leaking, but wouldn't that be rather noisy if there was a leak?

I'm thinking it's probably dirty valves, but what makes you think it's #7, Crossram? Is that cylinder prone to deposits?

could be burning up an exhaust valve.
$600.00 later in was fixed.
X heads are a beautiful thing.

check firing order first, my 340 did the same thing after i had my brother help with tune and didnt double check him just noticed you said that u checked the wires could also be vaccum advance linkage in the distributor loose or the screw could be striped

Do I need to relive the nightmare one more time???LOL!!! We had a 72 Challenger 340 car, ran good but popped through the exhaust. Checked everything, wires, timing chain, ignition, no sign of problem. A couple hundred bucks later and more than that in hours the culprit was found...a cracked insulator on one of the plugs. They were new so we never changed them despite removing and replacing them a couple times searching for the problem!!! Just sayin'!!! Geof

Old school,
We use to get it up to operating temp, remove the air cleaner, run it up to about 2500 and pour a couple of quarts of water down the carb. Blew all kinds of **** out.
Aw hell, I'm a redneck.

Your balls must be at least twice the size of mine own.

Coca cola works better, it has sugar in it. But really, a pint of water like that being cold, makes the hot carbon pop off the metal. I have seen it done so many times, and work. And never hurt a thing, but the crap shooting out the exhaust...
Before I went to work for a dealership, I worked for a friend's dad, who owned a service station right in the middle of town, where all the old widows lived. Cars running bad- sent my young butt out on the expressway to blow out the carbon. That didn't get that 2 years of putt-putting for 10 blocks to the store and back? Coca cola. Lol.

I've done the water trick also, it works. Like MVR said, operating temp- 2,500rpm. just trickle the water in slowly so it vaporizes. The hydrogen molecules stick to any carbon deposits in the combustion chamber while carrying the oxygen molecules with. The extra oxygen heats the carbon deposits causing pre-detonation(before the plug fires) in the chamber. This is why the motor needs to be revved. The pre-detonation loosens the deposits and they blow out the exhaust.

BEFORE you try this, it is HIGHLY recommended that you back your car up to a WHITE chebbie! hehe

............Is it just popping or actually missing.............if its just popping it could b a bad pick up in the dist,,,,,,to check 4 this unplug the vacc advance..........kim........

In the early days of unleaded gas you could buy from Holley a "water injection" system to help with the bad gas that the 11:1 engines were looking for. Ah Shell gas with Platformate, 101 octane for 24.9 cents a gallon. Were did we go wrong?
