Project- Bills Buggy

Yea that fenders turned great, after you buff out the paint, it should really look good with that new vinyl roof. Are you putting a stripe back on?

Congratulations on getting it painted. Do yourself a little favor when you buff it out, use masking tape on all your edges & body lines. Especially if you have never cut a paint job before. I've buffed out quite a few cars & I still mask off the lines for protection. You can then go back & hand rub the areas the tape covered. It's more work but sure beats an oops after you came this far. Good luck!

yeah that fender came out nice!

yup, the close up pic shows the orange peel a bit more. but it looks like you got a good thick layer of clear to work with to smooth it all out ...so you should be dandy. And yes be carefull not to burn through!....that would be a bummer.

I had a mustang painted a couple years ago and the guy that buffed it went to deep on a body line and ended up scorching the paint a bit. otherwise the rest of the car came out flawless. and had a heck of a shine to it.

I know what your going to....ive been at my project duster for about 3 years now and im itching to get it done and over with already so I can just enjoy driving it and cruising with my family. I have enjoyed working on the project....don't get me wrong, but its been and up and down roller coaster due to funds, weather, space, labor intensive fix's,lack of help, hard to find parts, and the list goes on.

but I am in the "home stretch now. Just need to finish knocking out the body work so I can get some primer on it. then its just a matter of waiting for some nice consistent weather to lay color and clear.

but its awesome you will have it pretty much ready to go in time to get a summers worth of cruising out of it and some good family fun. thumbs up to you on all the A+ work and be sure to thank your buddys for any help ....id love to have some friends that would be willing to help me on my project but they are all to scared to get dirty or are the type that dont do nothing for anyone unless they get something out of it ( also the type that forget about everything you have done for them lol) thats been a big hold up on my duster is pretty much tackeling it all by myself from top to bottom.

love the color on the dart though and cant wait to see it buffed out!

Thanks Jerrod... The kind words mean alot to me. And yea, I have a great group of friends, without them I would've never come this far. I am very thankful for them and all their help.

Your definitley in the home stretch with the Duster.. I know all too well just how frustrating that stretch can be.. it feels like your walking down a hallway with a door at the end, and no matter how hard your trying you just cant seem to quite get there... burns you out sometimes. Keep plugging away my friend, your so close.. I cant wait to see the Duster in primer, and then paint.. I am excited for you that your this close... I will post buffed buggy pics hopefully by this weekend.. stay tuned my friend..

Looks good Bill. Looks like it turned out better than some of the Easter eggs I colored. We did a '67 Mustang last year that had orange peel like that. A little wet sanding and buffing and all came out good. And, yes, flourescent lights make it look worse than it will in the sunlight. How much assembly do you have to make it road/show worthy?

Thanks man... I have a laundry list of things to do once the scuff and buff is out of the way.. but its not as long a list as you might think.. I have some touching up to do on the suspension paint (damn overspray) and i have some things to do in the interior.. then its just a matter of reassembling the rest of the car.. trim, hardware...etc.. things of that nature... Mechanically shes all ready to go...

Wtg Bill Keep pics coming.

thank you.. stay tuned, scuffed and buffed pics coming this weekend I hope

Thanks, and thanks for the advice.. I PM'ed you with some questions, so I look forward to hearing back from you. I will keep you all posted how the scuff and buff goes....

Fingers crossed everyone! lol

So last night we unwrapped the buggy.. pulling all the masking off for the last time (THANK GOD) .. Turns out now that the weather seems to have returned to winter, the paint was still a touch too soft to start wet sanding, we just warmed up the garage, and tried to get her nice and warm... hopefully we start the scuff and buff tonight.. I dont expect to have any more pics for about a week or so... However, when we took the masking off, and I finally got to see that new vinyl and the paint together, I was in love lol... Just wanted to share some more car ****... I also wanted to include better pics of how that passenger side fender turned out.. It looks way better than I though.. You really have where we pieced it all together (of course all of you do, cause I posted pics LOL .. but I dont think people will ever be able to tell) ... all in all I am one very happy dude... I'll keep ya all posted on how the scuff and buff goes...

Speed,
I have been reading your thread and a good build is going on. I can remember after my son's 64 val got painted. You sit back and enjoy it and can't wait to get it done. It is going to take you longer to put the rest of it back together than it did taking it apart. Your going to get paranoid about putting a scratch on it. I know I did, almost went through the roof. I realized that it's going to happen and I can say I was the first one that did it.
Keep up the good work.

Thank you very much for the compliment. Yea I'm already paranoid. More so than I ever have been during this whole project lol. But I know shes gonna get scratched, or nicked putting her back together. I'm ready for it lol. I'm still gonna be super careful, and just keep my fingers crossed lol

Well.. It took 3 days of sanding, but the scuff is done.. thank god... lol... Now hopefully the first part of this week, the buff gets done.. I will post a few pics of her all smooth and shiny again.. That was my first attempt at scuffing the clear (or color sanding or whatever you want to call it lol) man was it a lot of nerve straining work ... I am just happy to finally be done sanding that car... Once the buff is done, I can finally start going back together... I am getting that itch to drive her... bad.. lol.. stay tuned

Nice job Bill, keep up the good work.
Black and blue was never a good combination lol, but in this case, WOW!

Looks good, when you buff it stay off any fender line. Hand rub these areas.
What grit did you cut the clear with?
What pad and compound are you going to cut it with?

Thanks and, well... I always did like black and blue, but when I started this, a total 'black and blue' theme wasnt what I was after.. I just kind of accidentally wound up with it.. LOL .. but I love it..

My friend who painted the car is the one that is going to buff it out, so I cant really answer the buffer questions.. he works in a body shop so I have faith it will go well.. as for the grit used.. we used 1500 for all but the passenger side.. We had to start with 1000 then hit it again with 1500 to get her smooth.. I of course will still worry about all body lines and such... lets just say I will be sweating until its over.. LOL .. but like I told my wife, I have enough paint and clear left to start over in the event of catastrophic disaster LMAO ..

we had to use 1000 to start with on the passenger side that is...

It will come out like a mirror, have faith brother.
All the hard work is about to pay off.
I am aobut to start the body work on my kids duster, he is 12 now so I have 4 years.

I appreciate the compliment my friend... You gonna do a thread for the Duster? If so,.. I will be checking it out :thumbrig:

They have 30% off sales quite often, unless it's really something you need immediately.

dang Bill saw your post earlier about color sanding then just clicked on it now and started strolling down to the bottom to read or look at pics flew by the red one and was thinking you got that glowing cherry red need to slow down or your arms gonna fall off. then i scrolled back up and seen it was another dart,... darn this cymbalta they warned me about the side effects too
