The reason acetone works is because the tires contain an anti-oxidant that turns brown when it oxidizes. Doesn’t show much on the black, but is very evident on the white. The anti-oxidant residue is soluble in acetone so it just dissolves it away. The Scotch-brite pad just works it in and scuffs up any dirt attached to the anti-oxidant. Wipe it dry with a a paper towel or rag when done. Depending on how bad it it is, you may need to repeat once or twice.
 
Went to the shops this old Chevy was there looks like he polished the caps for the big day out got old Firestones on it

We've got a vintage SCL (pre-family lines) caboose down here in an industrial park.

I believe it is still in service as an occasional shoving platform for a regional short line that serves the park (large enough to have an airport inside) and a nearby ethanol transfer station.

Next time I'm that way I'll try to get a pic.
