The rain let up today so I finished restoring the last cast iron piece from the bunch I got a few months ago. This one is a 3 qt sauce pan and lid. Finding a lid with a pan is rare.

Like most of them, this one was in pretty rough condition when I got it.

But a couple of hours with a wire wheel on my cordless drill and they were well cleaned and ready to season.

I just finished the last coat of seasoning an hour ago. They are ready to cook with!

My father would pick up used cast iron pans and bake them in the oven on the self clean mode and they came out like new ! Just saying, , might be easier !

You can’t clean rust off a cast iron pan by baking it…at any temperature.

Also, heat above 500F will permanently destroy the cast iron molecular structure rendering it unsalvageable and completely useless for cooking.

The self-clean oven method can only be used for flaking off old seasoning and the cycle has to be short so as to not destroy the cast iron.

Removing old seasoning is best done with oven cleaner as the lye will dissolve the coating without harming the pan.

Rust has to be manually removed to get back down to the pure cast iron surface below it before it can be properly seasoned.
