Rare Cars that you didn't buy

-
In 1975 I couldn't afford a beautiful 1967 GTO convertible for $700.
A few years later I had a friend that came up with a 383 powered 1968 Road Runner. I could have gotten that one for about 600.
It had the Hemi callouts in the hood.
At the time I thought it was a little too rusty:angry7:

Okay, in high school in 1979 I got a ride in a '68 Hemi Roadrunner.......it was $3500 and mint. Then in 1989, I passed an absolutely mint red AAR Cuda with a 4-speed for $5500.....the guy was freaking out because he had nowhere to store it. Passed up a mint "grandpa" 1971 442 Cutlass for $1500......it was almost showroom condition. Passed up another totally mint "grandpa" 1965 Impala SS with a 283 and a factory 4-speed for (I think) $900......that nice creamy yellow w/black interior, buckets, console. I also remember seeing a '69 4-speed Judge on one of those cheapo car lots for $1500......I still remember checking out that "Ram Air" pull knob under the dash......WOW!!!

But the one car I DID buy was a 1965 Cutlass 442 convertible with some front end damage for $750 in 1990. I changed out the front clip and sold it for $1750 the following week, thinking I was bad-***. Dohhhhhhhh!!!

But the one that sticks out in my mind is a '70 Charger (no drivetrain) for $3500 in 1990.......and it had "HEMI" emblems on the doors....

I got a buddy with a real one in his garage on the south side right now. It is completely torn apart and in boxes, just ready to be put back together. He bought the car 10-15 ago for 5 grand. Lucky bastard. :thebirdm::angry7:

:-D:-D:-D

Damn, he is lucky. :-D

Back in the early 80's I had the oppertunity to buy a hemi cuda with a spare motor from a guy for 10K (was getting divorced and need quick coin). I was too young and broke at the time............I'm still crying over it.

Oh, i walked to jr high/high school past a K mart, people used to park cars along the sidewalk to sell.

On day a 68 Charger showed up. It stayed there for over a month, i finally called them, they wanted $800 for it. PLEAAAAAAAAAAAASE mom, can i borrow the money???? NUTS.

This was 1980 or 81

This car was $8,000 in '99. A real Hemi R/T with non numbers matching but correct year drivetrain that needed rebuilt, and the car needed front collision repair. I waited too long thinking about it and one of the local snakes grabbed it for a big profit.

two that i can think of a '70 hemi charger r/t i believe for $8000 just a year ago. had the money just the bank didnt work fast enough. it sold at an auction for $16,000 then fliped for like $100,000 i think lol and a 72 duster 360 drag/street car. it ran 12s at bandimere for $800. would of been my first car so my dad said no but is kicking himself now lol

In 1982, a '71 340 Cuda. Hemi orange, orange interior, black convertable top, four speed, shaker hood, hood pins, driving lamps, lugage rack, black billboard stripe, ralley wheels, original tires and paint, car had 23,000 miles and was stored inside. At the time I thought $8,500.00 Canadian dollars was too much for me to come up with. I was 22 years old and still living at home. The car sat inside for another seven years and was then sold for about $15,000.00. I don't know what it's worth now.

1968 Charger R/T, auto F8 Green w/ white stripes, rusted out fuel tank-$2500-1997'
1969 Charger 383 Auto-$2000-1998'
1970 Charger SE, 383, auto, #'s matching, magnum 500's, stored in a garage since 1981, $2500 running and driving-1998'
1968 Charger 383, Auto, B5 Blue, Black Vinyl Top, straight, rust free, $2500 - 1999'

Everyone of those chargers just makes me cringe these days. My dream car is a Bullitt Charger, 68' 440-4speed....and thinking one day I would run across THE ONE, I passed on all of those....bought a 73 Duster 318 bucket seats console instead and never have forgotten ANY of those chargers.

These days, a 68-70 Charger in the condition of ANY of those would bring upwards of $10,000.00 and now I can't touch them....much less a R/T 4 speed car.

Ohhwww, my stomach is starting to hurt!................

Yeah, i have always wanted a 68-69 Charger too. When i was working in Ca. a friend of mine invited me over for Superbowl. I worked with this dude 5 days a week, 8 hrs a day, never mentioned cars really.

Watching the game, no more beer. "oh, its out in the garage in the fridge" I go to the garage, whats in it? A 68 R/T. "oh yeah, my uncle just gave that to me" GRRRR

1973 Barracuda Ralley Red 360/727 trans, black interior. only thing wrong with it was the paint was faded abosolutely no rust $5000 about 4 years ago.

1968 Chevy Camaro SS 350 car. Just needed some TLC. Was my dads friends husband's car. The guy died and she didn't know what it was worth was asking $2,500. Dad thought I wouldn't have been interested so he didn't tell me till about a week too late it was sold.

1972 Charger 340/727, Yellow white interior. Needed minor bodywork paint and interior. $1,200. I was 14 and didn't know any better and passed it up for a 1983 Trans Am 350 for $600.

Hinesights a ***** ain't it! lol

I have remember another one that got away but I am not sure it was rare.

A 70 or 71 plymouth station wagon. A big block with a 4 speed. BIG, Green, and long. The seller wanted $1,200. The exwife said no way.

In the mid 70's I passed up a cool '69 Red, white and blue Rambler Scrambler for $1200

In the early 80's I passed up a real "barn find" '63 split window 'vette for $2500.. I was about to have my first kid and that was a lot of money, even though it was cheap for that car at that time..

Whattaya gonna do ?? Good thread

All the 70 and 71 Hemi Cuda Converts that I could have ordered at cost.....
Couldn't afford them then and still can't afford them now.

Could have bought this old race car back in the late 60s from a friend of my older brother for about 5 grand...

1955 Ferrari 121 LM -- 1 of 4 LeMans factory team cars. Current owner paid 3.4 million for it.

69 Hemi Road Runner auto, green . $3500 but had just bought a 69 340 Dart for $1000 that had cleaned me out. This was in 1981.

Reading some of the posts reminded me of a car that I didn`t buy only because once I drove it I hated it. In the late 70`s or early 80`s I saw a `69 427 3x2`s 4spd. Corvette, red with black interior for sale. I think it was priced at $3000.00 and I was ready to buy it right then and there. Once I drove it my mind was made up, I thought that car was one of the biggest piles of ka-ka I`d ever driven. Gorgeous car but one huge POS.

My buddy lived with his Aunt in Toledo Ohio when he was 19 around 1990.He found a Silver 1969 1/2 Road Runner 20,000 original mile unrestored car.The owner of the Road Runner wanted $1000.00 for it.He begged his Aunt for a loan. She said no that Plymouth will never be worth anything.Three years ago we showed his Aunt how much 69 1/2's were selling for and she about had a heart attack.

I havn't passed up too many mopars.

I did pass up a 1970 nova SS in 1997 for $2000. OK body, no carb, good interior. Said to be a runner. Floor pans were rippled though. Prob in a hefty wreck at some point. so I don't know if it would have been that good a deal.

One late 60's polara, stripped down but solid for $600 last year. had no space. had 383 big block, but that was for another $600. again, it may have been missing alot, prob not too good a deal. I was just offered it.

Like I said, I don't pass up too many Mopars that are a good price, although....

I Did pass up that 1970 dodge dart RT on that other post a while back. You know the one...sitting in that feild in Washington... I could have gotten it for a crate of milk and a dozen eggs! and this was 10 monthes ago!!!!

Not too rare but i regret it all the same. It was a '79 Firebird trans am formula, front disc brakes and a 400ci engine, with the shaker hood, t-tops snowflake rims, 45,000 miles in it and all original. Man i wish i had that car, the reason i didnt get was cause it needed a carb, brake lines, a bit of body work, and some paint. My dad said he wouldn't let me buy anything that needed work cause i was looking for a driver. it also came with a brand new set of t-tops the whole thing was $800 the guy said he'd give it to me for $700.

1970 ford cobra torino gt 427 "sohc"er 4 speed posi motor was built dyno proven 700hp immaculante interior and under hood needed paint

I worked for a guy named Rick Stark for a bit, a Corvette/speed shop

A guy came in with a 68 427 tripower, 4 speed Corvette. I put a new suspension and different rear gears in it.

He cam back and asked how it drove now. I told him I wasnt going to drive his car. This was mid 90's, mint car, probably worth $60-70,000.

He says go ahead, drive it. Well, being underpriveleged, i had never driven any manual trans muscle car. The clutch was heavy as hell, practically had to stand on it.

I kept stalling the car, he says just go ahead and drop it. So i do, at about 2000 rpm, the friggen thing takes off, with me grabbing for the steering wheel.

Nice car, but to drive that you need a huge left leg and arms of steel to turn the thing. I wouldnt really want one either.

Can think of three...'71 Barracuda Convertible, 318, solid but needed carb and some restoring for $5000 in 1994, a 66 383 Charger for $4500 in 1994 and a 70 383 Barracuda Gran Coupe, 4 spd for $12000 in 1999. Wife was pregnant with our second child when we went for a test drive in the 70. Thought she was going to go into labor!

Really regret the convertible...I'm sure I'll think of others.

Some of these stories are getting a bit ridiculous. Most of the time I can just ignore it but I really have to say something in this case.

(1) Shelby had walked away from any involvement with Ford well before 1970.

(2) Cobra and GT were two different trim levels of the Torino.

(3) The 427 sohc was old news by that point, still available over the parts counter but not experimented with in production cars by 1970. A street trim 1964 Galaxy with sohc 427 power was built in an attempt to prove to Nascar that it could be a production engine, but that attempt failed as it was banned anyway. By 1966 the cammer was viewed by Ford as a failed experiment to dominate Nascar, and the drag race guys got all of them to themselves.

By 1970 the Boss 429 was everyone's focus as it had a chance to beat the Hemi and be considered a legitimate production engine. IF a sohc 427 '70 Torino was ever built by someone connected to Ford, it was a one time deal as a special request. Alot of sohc 427 powered cars were built in the '60s and '70s by private owners and speed shops. If this car was what you say it was (and I really doubt it), then it may have been a custom built when it was still a fairly new car.

(4) Assuming your '98 Ranger was fairly new at the time, I could see someone wanting to trade a '70 Torino for it IF it had something in it other than a 427 sohc. The 427 sohc engine is much rarer than the 426 hemi, in my opinion more valuable, and most likely by the late '90s the engine alone is worth more than a '98 Ranger.

Not too rare, but back in 77/8 fresh out of school with a min. wage job and no transpo. my dad called around to friends, A guy who owned a body shop said he had a car within my budget. Dad was going to co sign a bank loan for me. We go to the shop and there sit a freshly painted, beautiful,Red, 68 mustang, 351 clev. 4 spd. Run real strong. My Dad asked over the phone, if it would pass inspection, guy said yes. I wanted it REAL bad. Then Dad noticed it had balding tires, got pissed, and walked out. The man wanted $800 bux. I was devestaded. I`ll never forget that disapointment.
