Rear brake size

I ordered these from summit: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/axt-axs445/overview/year/1974/make/dodge/model/dart

they are 10 x 2.5 in shoes for the rear of my 74 swinger. But when I took everything off of one side I compared the new shoes to the old and they don't match up. The old shoes measure 10.5 x 2 in and new ones 9.5 x 2.5 in. Do I have 11" brakes from a different model? http://www.forcbodiesonly.com/mopar-forum/archive/index.php/t-7788.html

I just need to find a set of brake shoes and a wheel cylinder that fit. I have a picture but it won't upload onto here so I'll try to post it later.
 
Ok I got it to upload. The new one is on the left and the old ones are on the right

Can you try to measure the shoe from top to bottom to get a ballpark what size they are???


That one on the left is no good. That top triangular slot will not hold the upper spring loop, it should be a circle like the first hole on top of the shoe that it is next to. Th triangle hole is too big for the spring end to stay connected. Been there - done that.

Some of the companies are trying to "commonize" their parts and they won't work in some cases. These companies are clueless or don't care. Find some shoes with a circle hole for the top springs, not the triangle slot.
 
If you look at the drum you removed, somewhere on the face where the wheel goes, there should be a number at least identifying the max drum diameter. If it's a 9.xxxx then 9" or 10.*** then 10". By the measurement of the old shoes they should be a 10". I personally would try to find a local auto parts store. Anyone worth anything should be able to get you set up.
 
They sold you the wrong ones. Your car comes with both size rear brakes. The Napa part no is TS TS333
 
What rear end do you have? Small or large bolt pattern?
Measure the inside diameter of your drum. Should be 9", 10" or 11" (within approx. 0.10inch)
 
I couldn't find a number on the drum. I measured the inside of it though, and it was 11". I don't know what rear end I have but it's got 10 bolts if that makes a difference. I'm pretty sure it's small bolt pattern (4.5" x 5 sound right?).

10 bolts on the back cover is an 8 1/4" and to have 11" drums it has to be big bolt pattern. Big bolt pattern is 5 lugs with a 4.5" pattern. My advise is to take your drums and old shoes to a local parts store that can actually do something besides punch computer keys and see what they can do for you. NAPA might be your best choice.

I personally have no way of confirming what you have and wouldn't be willing to guess which would result in you buying more brake shoes that won't work.

Do you like to pay those prices when you can pick up shoes locally for less than half that price? Take what you have to the parts store and you will get the right parts plus save money.

So I went to NAPA and ordered some shoes. Part number TS TS334. They're 11" x 2" and they fit dodge monaco, polara, some d100s and w100s, and plymouth fury's. The guy counted the holes on my shoes and the picture and the hole at the top is a circle not a triangle too. And it comes with the pin for the parking brake. So these should fit but will see when they come in for sure.
 
Looks like you found your answer. In the 1974 run, a strike from a supplier caused Chrysler to go to their parts bin and use the 11x2'' rear brake setup from the C body line on "some" A bodies thus having 3 different sizes of brakes on the rear.Most known were on the 8 1/4 axle. I found this out from a parts manager at a dealership and it was also a article printed in Mopar Action Magazine. A friend was parting a 74 Dart that I got the rear from,,I too found out the hard way. Bought drums,shoes and hadrware for the 10x2 1/2 tried to assemble and "What the H#!! ?"
 
Thanks to all the replies and advice. Darter6, that makes more sense now. I've heard some people say that these rear brakes are a really good set up on an A body.


Got my shoes and a wheel cylinder. Couldn't get the brake line that goes in the wheel cylinder off. Does anyone know what size the nut is? 10mm is too big, 9mm too small. 3/8" too small, 7/16" too big. The 10mm fits on, but when I go to loosen it, it starts rounding the fitting. There's no other sizes between those, unless you go to 32nds, which it would be 13/32" I think but you can't find a wrench that size.

THAT IS HOW you measure brakes you do not attempt to get diameter from the shoes.

You DO measure the WIDTH of the shoes.

I measured the height just for illustration. Trying to measure the width with the shoes off of the car is too difficult. (there are gaps, and it's difficult to tell how much gap to use to set up the picture).


You have to use a little logic. In the picture above where I measured the shoe, it was a little over 9" from top to bottom of the shoe. That would rule out that it was for 9" brakes as it was bigger.... It's just for ballpark purposes, quick and dirty....
