Some jerk rear ended my 1964 dart convertible and bent my rear bumper all up. Does anyone have any tips on removing the rear bumper?

Tip: Spray the bumper bolts (nuts backside) with a good penetrating lubricant. Do this a few times... wait, remove the nuts with a combination wrench of the right size. Do not remove all of the bolts, have a helper hold the one side of the bumper. Then remove the remaining bolts, puller bumper straight off. Usually, four or six bumper bolts and they could be different length depending how many brackets they go through. And yes, check for license plate light bracket and wiring.

You may have to attempt to pry the bumper back out some to get to the bolt to the left of the license plate.

I would unbolt the brackets from the car, since you will have to replace one of them anyway, and I am not sure the best way to do that. try penitrating oil (acetone and trans fluid) then heat, good luck. I see thousands of dollars worth of damage there, did they have insurance ?

If you decide to straighten and rechrome- Sherms in Sacramento no longer does bumpers. You will be reduced to selecting a lesser quality shop.

The correct way to remove a bumper is to unbolt the brackets from the car leaving the brackets on the bumper.

Agree, especially when the bumper is as badly dented as this one. OP is probably gonna have to replace at least the left bumper bracket, not just the bumper.

Yes, luckily for me, the guy has insurance!

Schlockfink, I see you're in Castro Valley. I used Auto Truck and Bumper Recyclers in Hayward CA (510-881-1886) for both of my bumpers on my '65 FS project. You're close, take it too them, see what they say. They do great work and also polish and repair trim parts, replated my air cleaner as well. Reasonably priced too. Bob

Thanks for the tip! I'll look them up.

Don't show the insurance company any driver quality bumpers, only show them the re-chromed stuff. yours was too nice for something dinged up or rusty.
