I just finished putting my 68 dart back together, and have put about 50 miles on it. yesterday I took it out on the highway for the first time.

It didn't like it.

I was on the highway for about 5 minutes. 2 minutes later I was home. I checked under the hood since I could smell something burning, and discovered the exhaust header glowing slightly. The car also has no power and bad acceleration, and I have to let it warm up, like, 5 minutes otherwise she'll stall on takeoff. She also idles a little rough, and is hard to start. All this leads me to believe she's running too lean.

The question is: How do i fix this?

The engine is a Super slant six with a 2-barrel carburetor, probably out of a 79 aspen.

Sounds like late timing to me.

Run through all the tune-related basics; tune-up parts and technique suggestions are in this post. Late ignition timing (either because the base timing is too late or the mechanical and/or vacuum advance systems aren't working correctly) is a short-list suspect for this list of symptoms. So is improper camshaft timing. So is a carburetor issue—sounds like you're not real sure about this carburetor and its condition. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download.
