Scored a small block tonight from Facebook

Its cobbled.

Not stating anything helpful here, and never have paid much attention to the new chevy engines. But did u all know that they claim the ls engines have 6 bolt mains / The reason they will take so much boost etc ?.

318 or 360 , I and leaning towards 360, most of all I have seen with a 727 trans are 360's, outstanding find Keith, swirl port head did come out on 318, great heads.

Casting numbers above the starter will tell you what motor it is without any disassembly. Passenger side gives the year motor is mostly always 1 yr ahead of the car it came from.

Everyone is going with the LS now . It is just a better motor. Guys are getting them from the "you pull-its" cheap and boosting them with no work and they make tons of power. Blow the motor and go get another for $125. The cheapest way to go fast.

The material used on these LS blocks is much better than the new Hemi's. Just something Ray Barton showed me. Ray is now racing and building COPO Camaro's. The last time we went for breakfast he told me the new Hemi's are junk. I just started laughing. "The man who made his name building Hemi crate motors" David told me the same thing when we got back to the shop. Less work time and more track time. They also had a bunch of new drag pack Challengers there.

If you ever get to know him he is a blast. Especially when they are together. Like father like son

I would bet from the exhaust manifolds that's a 360.... 318 manifolds weren't that beefy... Unless they put different ones on truck motors...

Plus the kick down linkage is not from 1970, it looks like from mid 70's like 74 give or take...

I also think they got the valve covers on backwards, usually the pcv is on the passenger side... :BangHead:

Either way, it's a good score... Way to go Keith...
Truck manifolds are pretty much the same for either a 318 or 360.

Super looking engine, Casey.

That is my Buddy Brian's 318, he was born of Mopar Parents. So he eats, drinks, and sleeps mopars.

He always felt that the 318s did not get the recognition they deserve. Knowing what good engines they are, he set out to build one worthy of recognition. Proof is in the pudding, that one performs.

Now with the availability of the factory mopar 302 Closed Chamber Heads, it's a whole new ballgame for the 318s.

I have never, ever, ever seen a 318 J head.

I've put them on 318's in the past... Even with the drop in compression from the larger combustion chambers, the larger ports with increased flow make a good improvement...

You could option a 727 on the 318 as a heavy duty trans... But it's rare...

Found an ad for a 318 and 727 trans on FB Marketplace not far from me, guy said it came out of a 1970’s Dodge truck, looked like a Warlock to me...said it ran good and shifted nice, claims it has 75k miles. I figured for $300 it seemed like a good deal especially since it had almost every engine accessory on it. I figured that it might make a good engine for the wife’s Valiant once I freshen it up and put a 4-speed behind it...but then I noticed the heads...there is a “J” between the plugs...score! I can’t read the numbers on the block to see if it’s a 340 cause the motor mounts and exhaust manfolds are in the way and I can’t get it out of the truck till Saturday when I have a little time to find a place to put it. Definitely not a 360, but I would love to find out its a 340!! How ever it could be a 318 with “J” heads installed...either way I think I got a good deal :)

BTW, I asked the kid why he pulled it and he said he’s swapping in an LS Chev and 6-speed...not my cup of tea but they are cheap...I just can’t go down that road so I’m glad to score this from him.

C'mon Keith, the suspense is killing us... Pull that driver's exhaust manifold and let us know what it is....

Alternator looks brand new :D

When I get time I’ll get it out of the truck and get a positive ID on things, I’m curious. If it is just a 318 I’m still plenty happy!
LOL, the 360/727/and t-case combo I bought for my son's power wagon ($600) is still in great shape. The alternator looked like it was just put on the day before I bought it, spun nice and free...

:mob: Darn thing locked up at first start up!!... Lol, the only thing I had to replace on the engine..lol...
Hopefully, results very...

Not on trucks, 727’s were behind every engine. In fact I have never seen a 904 in a truck.
And I have had a lot of 70’s dodge trucks.

I just had someone here for a 904 for a 85 250 dodge van. That was the first for me. I actually had him bring his trans along because I thought he was mistaken. It was a 904 lock up in the van from new.

Too bad it's a long tailshaft. Those lock up 904's are the **** in our old cars.

4 top, 2 through the side. Ford side oiling style...lol

Chevy is keeping with the hot rod crowd, they know how to stay in the picture beyond vehicle lines.

Our Gen3 Hemi is strong with cross bolted mains but no extra bolts like the LS.
