I got a 8 3/4 out of a truck from a buddy. Should I send it to moser and have them cut it down or should I try and find an A body housing? I already have the third member and diff and gears. Also gonna be buying aftermarket axles.

I personally would go the route of sending it to a reputable axle specialist and having it narrowed. Why? Because a lot of the used ones you fine may not be straight due to wear and tear and people over tightening the U bolts. Probably cost a little more to have it narrowed cause you'll have to pay shipping but you'll get a top notch piece that's straight.

You know I never even thought of that but you bring up a very good point. Id rather spend a little extra to know that it is good and right rather than waste money not knowing.

I would send it to strange or moser rather than buy new. I found a Dana 60 housing on craigslist for $20, It came out of an old truck, and I took it to strange and had it narrowed to 50 inches, hot tanked, and new flanges welded on and it cost me $300. Very pleased with the work and the price. It was pretty rough when I got it, but heres a pic of it now. Going into my 65 Cuda eventually.

If you are going with aftermarket axles, anyway, I wouldn't bother looking for an "A" body 8 3/4. In my opinion you will pay more for empty housing, then it would cost to get the truck housing narrowed. Then you would still have to do something about the "A" housing brakes.
"A" body 8 3/4 housings are way over priced.

I wouldn't hesitate a second to send it to Moser i've seen their work and its top notch i run a set of their axles in my car and the quality is far better from what i've seen of others..
