I've been reading about floating front ends . Add me to the list . I have a new federal pump and don't really want to tear it apart and shim . To let you know everything is new ,front end steering box , everything, and yes caster and camber are out of whack. I will address these issues first but I know from feel the steering is way lite. I want to get things close so I can have it aligned. My question... I'm looking at the adjustable steering valves. Heidts has one for $90. more then I really want to spend. Northern Tool sells an adjustable one way with no return for $40. would this work or do I need a return through the valve as in the Heidt valve.
In other words are the both lines adjusted when going through the Heidts to keep even pressure or is there no concern on the back low.

Tell ya Zig, alignment (and tires) can REALLY throw you for a loop. If caster is towards "the old standards, and then you add power steering, it will FEEL incredibly light and will get to the point it won't return. If you don't have offset bushings, and just about all the caster cranked in that you can, this could be a HUGE part of your problem.

Jim Lusk posted this long ago: (in other words ESPECIALLY with factory bushings you want all the caster you can get.........)

Alignment notes:

from here:

Front end alignment help please ??

Have them start with the front cam all the way out and the rear cam all the way in. Move the rear cam out until camber is in spec (1/2 deg. neg is good). This is the most positive caster that is available without new parts (offset bushings, tubular upper control arms, etc.). All of this is AFTER setting ride height. I usually set ride height with about an inch between the LCA bumper and the frame, then even the sides up.

Thanks Del . That's why I want to get caster/camber set before I do anything else. I put a framing square to the tires and from the vertical of the square , tires are about two inches neg. I bought one of those camber/caster gauges . I will get that all set but even with the car slightly off the floor there is no drag or resistance same on the floor same as driving. Alignment is a must and first before anything else. So back to the original question . Would I be able to use the Northern tool adjustable valve , adjusting the pressure side without adjusting return side.
