Just picked up a small block bell housing with a 4.8” bearing retainer hole. It was cast in 70; partnumber is rubbed off but starts with 2 and ends with 482...I assume it hasn’t been modified...could this possibly be from a T/A or AAR? I do believe that they had the big block (4.8”) bearing retainers...fact or faked?

Casting says it should have the 4.3" opening, somebody could have opened it up to the larger size, I know it only cost me $20 to have it done years ago.
Also Brewer's sells an adapter ring to go from 4.8 to 4.3 to take the slack up for like $30.

You may be right. I have heard that all e-body 4 speeds (dual shifter tails) had the larger input bearing size. Is that true? That may explain the larger hole. Otherwise, unless you really wanted to run an 18 spline A833 behind a small block why else would someone open it up from a 4.3”?

No, E-bodies with a small block used the same bell as A bodies.
The bell you have appears to be modified.

I thought all dual boss b/e body 4 spds used the 4.80 bearing retainer with larger input 308 bearing. So some bells were larger register.

Mine is.

That was what I thought too but I didn’t find much support. Trouble is, my Challenger is running and I’m not about to pull it apart to check..

I have a 70 cuda that is an original 4-speed car, the motor and trans is comming out of it in a month or two, I will check it and report back.
