Killin' a snake was just a part of livin out in the styx. Killed many a black racer, chicken snakes, copperheads, water moccasins and cottonmouths.:yawinkle:
If you have killed that many you are lucky. The majority of people who get nailed by venomous snakes get nailed while trying to kill or catch one. If you ever see a pair of venomous snakes, especially cottonmouths, LEAVE THEM ALONE. They are known to chase people who have killed their mates for long distances and bite the crap out of them repeatedly. If you have ever seen the effects of large doses of hematoxic venom you know it isn't worth the risk. Snakes fear humans and are not likely to hang out too close to the house.

Looks like a Western Rat Snake. Non-poisonous and a good snake to have around ( unless you're a rat, probably hates Chevys too). Too bad you killed it. I have a Tangerine Milk Snake that's non- poisonous and beautiful. Raised it from a lil' worm to about 3 feet now. Alot safer around the family than some of the people I know! How many people in your area have died recently from snake bites? I do understand your alarm. I used to be that way too until I found a snake in my yard once and picked up a stick and Trapped it first to check it out. Computers are an awesome source of info. Snake was harmless and just wanted to keep the moles, mice, and rats out of my ( and his) yard. I let him go and was never afraid of snakes after that. Easiest way to tell? Look at the eyes. Round pupils O Harmless, slitted pupils () poisonous. Easy and quick.

Mike,

Feel free to manage the wildlife on your property as you see fit. :)

Interesting to hear everyone's views. But there's another option than just killing the snake outright. Scream like a girl and run!

Seriously, on my property, I would do what I felt was best for the little kids and critters, and never look back.

Shoulda' ............... woulda'................ coulda' ...................

Mike made his decision and took the appropriate action at the time.

Snake is dead. Squirrels are alive.

THE END

You're kidding right? Unless his wife, kids, or dog are small rodents they have nothing to worry about.

Nope, I'll kill anything I even think might be a threat in the future.
No regret, no remorse, not a second thought.

X2 :-D

I learned something though, that round pupil/slit pupil thing, that's very interesting, I may end up impressing someone with that tid bit of information one day :-D I really don't like snakes much, not scared of them so much as the startle the crap out of me when they shoot out of nowhere.

Great info here, but don't you have to get kinda close to see their eyes...LOL

I slept just fine last night 8)and the wife was glad I did not do what I usually would have dun,:love7: She wanted to see the snake was dead because she seen me one time at the old home place pretending to kill a snake that was in our black berry bush She was not happy when she found out I picked the small King Snake up and put it around back of my shop and let her go.:protest:
When I said the boy took it with them to skin she did not believe me until I showed here the pictures, I am a nature lover and know my snakes well, and I made the decision to loose this one..
Here is my back yard and the tree and my wife's hobby shop.
Keep in mind it has been raining here for a couple weeks and or ice storm really tore up allot of tree's

LOL thanks for the diagrams there Mike. Its amazing this thing has turned into a did ya do right or did ya do wrong thread. his property, his right, and sheesh people it was just a snake... not like he killed a female moose about to give birth !!!! Oh... but then again.. what about its "mate for life" .... hunt it down and kill it too.

(keep in mind I have little regard for animals, rodents or fish. So form all the opinons you want of me. If its a snake, a squirrel, a rat, a whistle pig, a rock chuck, or any other misguided rodent it will die becaus of my doings. After all God gave me the knowledge to use gun powder, opposing thumbs, and most of all...... all them little moving targets.)

Alcohol related driving deaths in US around 15,000 per year. Poisonous snakes? About 15 !

So let's outlaw cars, alcohol and snakes.
15015 lives saved annually.

I bet if we just got rid of cigs, cars, guns, pork, free speech,
doctors and some lawyers we'd all just sit a round singing kum by ya.

It's just a matter of :clock:

And Rpm did I tell you I think your a big meany you you brute.

Love snakes but I can understand those who don't. Cudasrule hates them with a passion but I've convinced him to "allow" the king snakes because they will kill copperheads. MeMike, be careful with all those flyers. We had them get into our attic this year - first time since we've lived in the house and they can do quite a bit of damage. I was amazed at the size of hole they can get in through. No bigger than a quarter. Cost me $450 to get someone to set traps for them (no they did not kill them.) I could have used that $450 for the Dart!

Man, I would hate to live life with such irrational fears. The damage that the rodents those snakes would have eaten, and the diseases they can carry, are far more of a threat to your family and property than those snakes would ever be. It is far better to base your actions on knowledge than on fear.

That isn't really true. The large constrictors and other non-venomous snakes can have "cat eyes". My ball python has them. Also, you have to be pretty darn close to get that good a look at the eyes. The easiest thing to spot is the triangle-shaped head and that vipers, which are the ones Americans are most likely to run in to, have. The only venomous snake in the U.S. that doesn't have that trait is the coral snake but the vivid colors are a sufficient warning there.

What has memike done to deserve all this grief? It was on his property, trying to kill something that he enjoys watching, and there was the potential that one of his loved ones would get the bejeebers scared out of him/her if they almost stepped on the thing walking across the yard. Snake should have stayed out of his yard.

No one is really giving him grief. He said he doesn't enjoy doing such things and has caught and released them in the past. People are just passing on knowledge.

Even fewer spider bite deaths. It is funny. People do not have a natural fear of snakes, spiders, or other creepy-crawlies. It is a learned irrational fear. I have a snake and a bunch of spiders and scorpions. My 3 year old isn't afraid of any of them. She is fascinated by them. She knows not to touch any she runs across outside and to come and get me but she loves watching them. Every time I have the snake out she wants to touch it. She loves watching the spiders too. She laughs at my friends who are scared of them.

Blowing things just a little out of proportion, aren't you?
