As a car gets quicker? 1/8 mi track. When do they start wanting roll bars? NHRA or local rules?

Both NHRA and IHRA have rulebooks that outline it pretty clearly. They are available online on their website. Another way is to go to the track and look around and ask questions.

I dont think i answered your question so here is my second try. On an 1/8th mile track I believe its 7.30 and 95mph but I am not 100% sure. On a 1/4 mile track its 11.50 and 120. I do know that for sure although some of the tracks near me aren't going by those rules and are adhering to the 11.99 120 rule.

I looked at NHRA and some track websites. Not sure if bars are needed at 7.35 or 7.50 1/8 mile. Did see where I am right at the edge of needing a helmet. LOL, maybe my dirt bike helmet with the face guard will do (not really). The track I run is a listed NHRA track.

I don't want to put in bars. In fact I am gonna put back in a stock interior including the back seat. The guys were telling me last night that if you do make a run and get into a time/speed where you need more eqpt they tell you to put it on the trailer or drive it home till you get it changed. Just planning ahead...

Yup. If you start running fast enough without safety equipment they will pull the plug on you.

They can also do this for sound (if your track has a sound limit).

My car was kicked from Woodburn Or. because it went too fast without a roll bar.

It was kicked from PIR (Portland Or.) for sound........ And this was with a TTI, 2.5", x-pipe system. Ultraflows, tailpipes and original 340 manifolds.

So your choices are to put in the equipment or build to a level that doesn't need it.

My car is currently really quiet at the track compared to the rest but on the street it sound badass loud to me with the lumpy cam. I am going from kinked bends 2 1/2 through mufflers to smooth bends 3" with x pipe through mufflers. Sound won't be the problem except maybe with cops.

I am thinking it is 7.35 for bars but can't find it in writing.

Soooo, how can a guy know if he is fixing to bust the "speed limit" during a run? Once you bust, will they let you back if you tell them that you changed something and slowed it down? Maybe stack a bunch of metal weights in the trunk or something that can then be removed for the street. Gonna have to ask around the track tonight.

At my local track,a helmet is needed for faster than 13.99 in the 1/4.If you car is slower,I,d still wear a helmet for your own safety. You never know what could happen at the track, the guy beside you could hit the wall then you.Play safe!

You could put in an adjustable rev limiter. Set it lower at the track so you can't go faster than allowed even if you wanted to.

This would be the safest way. Better to not piss off the track guys by playing games, they have seen them all over the years.

And what pettybludart said. Some safety equipment you should have anyway. A helmet for example.

I am making my car slower and stock looking under the hood but I am keeping the scatter shield and drive line loop.

I will be buying a helmet on the way home from work today. I have a dirt bike helmet with the face guard but that just would be too goofy IMO for the track.

Helmet has to be Snell (2007 I think). Some of the cheaper ones aren't, be careful. I ditto what everyone else says and recommend getting a helmet even if the regs don't require it.

My local track says 7.22 in the 1/8th for roll bar, but they're an odd bunch. Every quarter mile track I've been to says 11.49 but your mileage may vary.

I'm in the same spot you are. Fortunately, it hasn't been a problem yet.

I had the same problem with my Swinger. I went under 7.50 quite a few times before they caught me and then they really got to know me and I would get busted in tech before I even made a pass. I always wear a helmet when racing, I dont care how fast. My track (Irwindale) has a thing for current helmets, I also think 2007 is the earliest it can be (5 year rating). What I did to slow my car was take 10 degrees of timing out of it for a total of 26 degrees and it slowed the car just over .3 and then I would short shift the 2-3 by 1000 rpm. good for 12.00s anywhere.
