Solid Cam, Use it or Not

This lobe concerns me second lobe from the left. Is that a dent at peak lift? Next, to the right, looks to be a flaw on the base circle, shouldn't bother anything. Back to lobe 2, I see a dent, can you take another photo.

If you're gambling Man then possibly run it. If I could feel the imperfections with my fingers I wouldn't use it unless I had to.

I guess one of the big questions should be what are you running it in? An a body? The rear end gears? A stall converter? A four-speed? And what are you expecting the characteristics to be? Are you going to daily drive it? Week end cruiser? Drag race only?..

This on every lobe? Can you wipe it off? (grease) Can you catch a fingernail on it?

Yes grease

Mic the lobes. If they are all within a mm, run it! We reused cams all the time...heck we even reused hydraulic lifters in high school. I NEVER wiped a cam lobe but my friend did once and we all shared the same stuff. Some have money, some have time..some need both.

This lobe is the one that worries me.
Maybe it's just the photo but it doesn't look right.

Its going to be a fun a$$ engine if I ever decide what I'm gonna put it in. I got a solid long block for 150 bucks with newish .030 h405cp pistons a set of j heads unknown cam and adjustable rockers. The block and heads have been oringed im gonna put that .528 mp cam with a eddy air gap port the j heads should be a fun combination and ill have under 600 in it minus the carb.

That should run pretty hard. Have a 528 in my 340, solid runner

Rusty if only you knew my budget your head would spin. I barter sell and trade for every thing I have.My pension and SS checks amount to around. $2300 a month combined. If I want something I have to sell something I worked hard to get when I was younger.

I have 2 Demons and one harley some antique tractors and toys. And worn out hands and shoes. I bought a new DC cam and lifters on this site for $99. I am Not the fortunate son. Neither is anyone in my family. We work for what we have and used what we worked for wisely.

My answer to him of not using that cam was thinking of wasting new parts such as lifters and bearings if the Cam is bad. You cannot tell the condition of the cam with pictures on the web and anyone that encourage its use with a "looks good to me" answer is an idiot.

By the way anyone that has been here knows I live in a mobile home in the country. so don't give an answer and insinuate you know me. I sold many mopars I collected in my younger years driving and old 53 chevy tow truck to get what I have. I built my garage by myself with no help using reclaimed wood and it was hard work. Where I live was a cornfield when I bought it. I lost everything and started over when my Dad was killed in the early 80's.

So don't quote me in your fucken posts anymore with your bullshit. You don't know me!
I was actually giving you a compliment, Steve. Sorry you're always lookin for a fight.

Ya, cleaned up will show its true colours. Kim
I agree, plus, anyone with any sense would either get a mic and measure it themselves or take it to a machine shop for a professional opinion, instead of hittin up the internet. All we can say is "based on what we see" since all we have are a few pictures. But "based on what I see" imo, it's a usable cam.

Well, that’s exactly what he wants to hear. Kim

What do the lifter bottoms look like? Just my opinion but I never use a cam when they have those wear patterns on the lobes. Kim
Yeah, all the way across the lobe n even...that gonna spin or bite.
From the pics I see, its marginal...looks like it has some issues.
Let's remember how shitty it is to lose a lobe n lifter in a new motor...
Very rare do you catch it before the bearings are grooved from debris and the crank scared.

More pics? Brake clean it dry 1st.

That's very true.

I got a few donated cam cores that are wasted and the wiped lobes are rounded. a height check will determine if any have lost material.
