So I recently bought a bone stock '73 318 2 barrel.
Since it is going to need to beat up on some stock mustangs from my high school, I am going to do a cam swap and put on a '71 340 4 barrel intake I got with the engine. My question is; since I am only changing the cam and intake, what cam would be best in terms of power and rump rump factor.

I was thinking about one of these three, but I want to see what you guys suggest.

Only the cam? Stay with stock. A cam needs to have the correct valve springs for it and if you're not willing to do that, it's a useless proposition. So leave it stock.

Way to much cam for a stock street 318. Even if u installed them 8* advanced. U will need to up the compression. U would need at least a 3500 stall and 3.91s to take advantage of it. Kim

Comp XE 256?

Summit K6900?

POPCORN and ring side seats.....

I would run the stock cam or something close if it is worn out. You don’t want to over do it and make it a pig with no torque on the bottom. Been there done that.

i have to ask.... what mustangs are you going after ???? You might need more than just a 4bbl/cam...

imo all the cams are wrong /unless you have a clutch / stick with a 340( stock) cam it would be the largest to use

If say a 1974 Mustang II, it won’t be a problem I’m thinking!
It's written in present, so I'm thinking if he's shooting for a Coyote, he would have better luck in the woods with a .22 :D

I like the splits for stock exhaust manifolds.

Here's one in a 318. It has a nice little lope and in this vid it's in a stock 318-2. The car owner took the video after cam break in but before he installed the 901 springs that came in the kit. He said the 901's took away some of the lope at idle and also it really runs nice after installing a 4 barrel.

Yeah, that one sounds good, decent lope, and could be pretty wicked with open headers.:D
Just wanted something that'll wake it up a little bit, was probably getting a little greedy with the .508 lift purple cam I was looking at.

I agree, those cams are too big for a stock 318 2 bbl...

If anything install a stock 340 automatic cam... 268-276 .429/.444 lift....

Here's a few good choices:

DODGE COMP Cams 20-309-4 COMP Cams Magnum Muscle Camshafts | Summit Racing

I like that .464/.464 cam, since it'll never really see the high side of 5600.
Thanks for the suggestions!

Do you intend to keep the non-adjustable stock stamped rocker arms? If so, a solid cam is off the table.
'
Well now that you mention it no, i will not be having a solid cam. The best option now is the cam KrazyKuda suggested, a comp .464/.464 268/276 hydraulic flat tappet cam.

That cam for a stock 318 is "a bit" big.
