Stop in for a cup of coffee

So my painter has been explaining for two weeks he would paint car tomorrow it is next etc etc. Drove over to his shop today, car still in primer. He explained he got behind again and I was only two away from paint. I am very frustrated. I simply turned my back on him and walked away, I just could not even speak. Nothing I could say would help the situation. Driving back to North Dakota I have made a unemotional decision. If Demon is not painted by Dec 1/I will trailer it home and paint it myself in my shop. I am loathe to do that as I have painted several at home and I am just not set up to do it. I really wanted a better job on this one. My tolerance for being jerked around has met its end. I am a patient guy and had you told me I will paint it 12/1 I would be fine. But to continually be told I am painting it tomorrow and not paint is just plain wrong. Thanks all for letting me vent.
I had to do something similar - except the shop was doing mechanical work not paint and body.
I took a few days off work to pick up the car and finish up the work.
When I showed up and it hadn't been worked on, I told the main guy I'm taking it home anyway.
Asked if he had a flatbed service they dealt with and they did.
They got the new engine in, and I found someone who lent me an engine hoist.
Then I went back and got the old engine.
That was that.
The car sat for about 6 months until my term was over and I was back in Philly for more than a day or two at a time.

I just dont get it. Its all billable time. Only excuse for not getting it done is you are incapable or plain old lazy.
I look at every job as billable hours. No other shop in town wants to replace or repair leaking exhaust manifolds, i like that work, its by the hour and as long as it takes...

theres a t-bird in the body shop,i offered to help out with the dirty work to get it moving forward, and to make room for my barracuda.
There is a challenger sitting at a shop, sitting outside with no glass in it,will be the 5th winter it has been full of snow. Its junk by now i think.

Well the deal with my Barracuda was this.
They had plenty of space but 'only' had three or four guys.
So it was a matter of time/project management.
The main guy I dealt with was also a mechanic. He was a pretty good guy and had some good welding skills and probably a good mechanic.
Owner of the overall business, which was machining plus this 'race car' shop they had setup, did no hands on work.
Not sure why things had dragged for the first months, but the last month or two the owner had prioritized "more important" customer(s).
I understand sometimes its neccessary to get an important job done for a deadline, but after that's over I expect to be put first in que.

Part B of the story is that they weren't as good as they thought. That was especially true of the new guy they added - who was assigned my car.
When a shop calls themselves a Race Ready Technologies, and works on race cars (some anyway), and the mechanics don't know basic maxims laid down by Carrol Smith, there will be problems. That and the new guy had a bit of attitude, insisted he knew mopars but worked slow as molases - all on t & m.

So put A & B together and the decision became obvious.

This truck just sold for $12 million. Named Thor24, it is powered by twin V-12 Detroit Diesel semi-truck engines with 12 superchargers that produce a mind-bending 3,424-horsepower. It's as ridiculously powerful as it looks and sounds.

Sorry to hear this. The shop didn't appear to be that big?? Your car has been there long enough your turn should of come by now. You've waited and waited and waited some more...too long!! He might be a great painter, but in reality he's not very good. I agree with you enough is enough and time to move on.

Sad to say, it’s time to cut your losses. It sucks but it is what it is. Short of you standing there, and watching him paint it, it’s not gonna get painted by Dec 1

Let alone if you push him what type of quality will he give you? Will he rush it just to get it done and gone?? Your better off moving on, like the rest have said.

Oh and hi everyone.

I got the new wheel covers for the GTS today. These along with the cover should keep the dust and grime off of her for the Winter. $20 for a set of 4 was a good deal and since they are outdoor wheel covers, they should last a good long time for indoor garage use.

Yeah, I'm sure mine is not in paint yet, and I am half a world away. But I also have made the decision to go get the car, when I get back. Yup PIA But need to do it

Doing good here. Starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel from all the hecticness this past summer and fall. Slowly getting a bit more time to relax and stop in on the site.. How have you been?
That is good to hear. Doing well. Demon got a tunnel ram that hasnt been tried out yet, a 3000 stall to be installed, and maybe a 3.91. Also picked up a 69 Super Bee project. Plans for hotel for MOP this summer and much more time to hang out. Bringing cars this time too depending on weather.

That's the question, isn't it?
Is it better to tell the painter he's coming to pick up the car on the 1st, or not?
Can't judge it from here.

Can’t tell from here either, but I’m inclined to say tell him you are coming next Friday Dec 5th to pick up the car...whether it’s in paint or not.

Give him enough time to decide if it’s a priority to get it done or not...with a hard stop date.

Mitch. I know its not close, but I can call the guy who painted my car to see if he's still there.
If the prep is done, Joe can knock it out fast and do a beautiful job.
Done in a real booth and done so smooth you'll think its been wet sanded after the application.

If that's too far (NJ), or he's no longer in business there's a couple of other possibilites I can think of.

I wouldn’t. Id just show up on the 1st with a trailer, if it’s painted, great, if not oh well it’s leaving with me. Reduces the odds of spiteful actions towards the car.

While that's a possibility - and John will have to be the judge of that - a lot will depend on how the message is delivered.
A lot of us mess that up. John prob handled it best to just turn his back and walk out. Message was clear and he didn't say anything provocative or threatening.

If he really wants it painted by the guy this is exactly what I was thinking. Assuming it is completely ready for paint, that gives him time to still do a good job with it. On the other hand if completely done with the guy, the sooner he pulls it out of there the better. Saying if not done by the Dec 1 with the Holiday and weekend coming would possibly result in a rushed job.

Awesome, I hope you do bring a car. It will be nice to have you stay and not have to drive back the same day.. Looking forward to hanging out with you again.

@Unconventional and @Mopar Tim

Oh man you guys should have had the rain we have here in Santa Rosa now. It is some of the heaviest rain I have seen since I moved here in 2013. And in Willits it is white on the ground from snowing.

No wonder they worried about flooding. And windy too. I think it was supposed to be up to 40 mph in the gusts if I am not totally on a berry trip now.

I understand it is a worry for mudslides and avalanches, but it is good for the farmers.

So painter reached out to me this afternoon. He is sincere I think and is now determined to finish the car. The part I have not mentioned is that I have paid him cash and did not request a receipt in an effort to move to front of the que. our dialogue today was how much cash do you owe me to settle up. At this point it is just business. I put my business owner hat on. Looks like he is energized to paint. I sure hope so, he is a genuine good guy and a great painter maybe just perhaps a poor business guy. I got the diesel fueled up and ready to drag race trailer and Demon home paint or no paint, I no longer care.

How far is the car from your home ?
