Stop in for a cup of coffee

So took a couple minutes today after work to work on the Polara. I have solved my no spark problem, new coil, ammeter wired together. However, the ignition switch is bad for sure, still waiting on the new one to come in. But I got to checking, @toolmanmike is definitely correct. Timing is WAY off. When the piston is at TDC in the compression stroke, the rotor was pointing at number 7. So I adjusted it to point at the number one position per the fsm. Starting cracking. Still didn’t fire, has fuel, spark indicators showed spark at all 8 cylinders, Checked timing again, this time when at TDC on the compression stroke, rotor was pointing number 8. So I thought I just have left the dizzy loose, nope it was tight. So I reset it again, cranked again, coughed, tried to fire but stopped. Tried again, nothing. So I popped the cap off, rotor now point towards number 2 when it’s at TDC. So I left the cap off and hit the remote starter, rotor rotates a bit, then hangs up, then starts moving again.

im thinking timing chain is jacked or stretched. Thoughts?
Me Thinks..You Are Jacked.....:poke::poke:

That could very well be.

Or a chipped tooth on the distributor drive gear or cam gear that it mates to...

If it was me, I would be pulling the front of that engine off and replacing the timing set....

Turn the balancer back and forth and see how much slop is there. Watch the rotor as you turn.

Nah. It’s a rebuilt hoppy dizzy. Definitely not the dizzy
JEEZZZZ the dist runs off of the Cam, the cam runs off of the timing chain If the timing set is crap, the Dist will not move as it should!!! NOTHING to do with the quality of the Dist.

I wonder if an LA timing set is the same as a Poly? I have a brand new spare set from my 408. I’d ordered two by accident several years ago

Lol. Well duh. I thought you meant the dizzy itself.

already pulled the pulleys and brackets all off. Gotta get the dampener off and then the cover. Shouldn’t be long to find out

Look at how sloppy it can get and still run good. LOL

This much slop reminds me of a head swap I did on my 22R, put a 20R head on my Toyota, profile was different. No chain made for this conversion, even link removal didn't make it acceptable with the tensioner mounted the way it was. So.....we remounted the tensioner, got the right pressure on the chain, no issues!
