HP stuff for Cummins. Yep!
Yep, I broke something in either the valve train or maybe an injector if I’m lucky. Suddenly developed a real loud metallic rattle that it’s not had before. Experience tells me either a tappet went bad, maybe a rocker went or an injector is stuck

None of that is good......

Nope. I hear nothing thru the screwdriver on the valve cover, which is why I’m leaning injector.
Damn things are so loud, how the heck you hear anything under the hood????:poke: Thing sound like eminent explosion when running great!!!

You know how you can set the idle and timing really good and quick on an old v8 like you did to Keith’s duster at Carlisle last year?

well that’s me with the cummins ISB series. I’ve played with them so much as I was growing up, I can detect the slightest pitch change and usually tell you what’s wrong before it majorly goes wrong.
That said, as loud as the ***** is, the screw driver trick seems to work much better on it than on quieter engines. Not sure why.

anyway, with the ticking coming from the intake manifold, which is where the injectors go in, my guess is the diaphragms inside to nozzle have cracked on at least one injector, meaning the tip is smacking the nozzle. I’ll pull them and send them out to be check for 10 bucks each.

I used to sell timing adapters with a induction loop for your timing light. Easy to set diesel pump timing.

I’ve got a scope from the fuel systems plant at cummins. Looks like a mini version of a Sun machine, but way newer but it’ll show the timing as well as pulse and opening and closing of the injectors. The one thing it won’t do which is what I need right now, is opening and closing pressure or flow in and out.

Good news is that IF it is an injector, they are rebuildable. But while they are out, I’ll probably have them honed out to bigger holes, probably 5x14s or roughly a 250 hp increase....

Morning! not too bad outside this morning.
will go above freezing today.

Saturday it is!
But i have to work, finish off a fuel pump job. Waiting for Fargo parts so i can move forward with it.
