Not sure what I can offer.
Sold my '74 Nova when I moved here.
Talk about a great car to learn on. Super simple and great access to everything.
Only electric problem it ever had was a taillight ground to rust.
I assume '72 Blazer is basically the same electrics in a bigger vehicle.
Just factory connectors hanging in the air, and SMALL gauge wiring to ALT, and main feed to Vehicle Accessories...like lights, heater ETC.

Gotta love 'upgrades'

Tim. My recollection is the Nova had no alt gauge, just a lamp. Like most baseline GM products just Fuel and Temperture.
Yea as far as the Alt, think that would be externally regulated in '72.
Hopefully your wiring guy didn't do like jpar and decide all positive wires should be red.

Delcotrons !
Because we refuse to call it an alternator

Delco Remy Division - Service Manuals

You see they have a couple different wiring schemes depending on the regulator?

or if no idiot light, there's this

So much simpler.
:)

Looks like it has a internal regulator setup...
Someone converted to an SI 10 or 12?
Takes a plug in the side for the wires.

One wire is the 'sense'.
The other wire is power to excite the rotor at low rpm. Once its capable of producing power the internal regulator diverts output back into the rotor as needed.

The excite wire usually comes from the ignition run.

Ammeter or no ammeter?

With no ammeter, there's a lamp and resistor in the exciter wire.
With an ammeter, there's a resistor or resistor wire.

Well that's about the limit of knowledge and library for Delco systems.
I'm don't know if there was a simpler or electronic version of the regulator before GM switched to the self - exciting internal regulators.

It looks like the 5 terminal regulator may not need the indicator lamp, but the other versions might. When I see a parallel resistor, that makes me think its a back up in case the lamp burns out.

Ok when at rest, but when I have to walk I get winded very easily...

I'm thinking about going back to the hospital when my son wakes up from his nap and can give me a ride....
Hope things get going better for you. You get healthy you hear?
