Nor will a long prison sentence. 5 years captive by the Taliban makes 20 years in a military prison look like a cake walk.

Nothing can undo the damage done to those that searched for him...and those that laid their life on the line to do it are true heros. But punishing the man further won't change anything, nor dissuade anyone from doing it again when they have similar mental issues. Nor will this verdict dissuade the heros of the future from risking all to rescue them.

Justice is pointless without mercy. We cannot become so cold that evil wins another gain on our humanity and makes us one step closer to the ideals of those we fight.
Dude!

Yeah well, he violated his oath, his general orders and his fellow soldiers. I could careless about mercy. He deserted plain and simple. This is why we are still in that hell hole 16 years later. This is whole bull crap of show mercy. No it's war. You kill the enemy. Not run off pretending to be James Bond. Not willingly giving information that lead to your fellow soldiers getting ambushed. No punishment is too cruel or too harsh.

Trust me, what just happened today in that court room just weakened the entire US Army. There are excuses for his behavior and his choices. He got off free and clear.

I still say that justice must be tempered by mercy in all circumstances or humanity is lost. The military is no different. Otherwise, we will become our own enemy.

Exactly. We in the military are supposed to be held to higher standards. That's why there is the UCMJ. No this verdict did nothing but weaken this nation today.

The execution of traitors whether delusional or intentional has kept more from doing the same. IF he walks the next guy will be more likely to do the same

He was already shown his mercy. That trade was more than enough mercy.... oh by the way, of those terrorist release for this sob, all have been confirm by us intel sources of having gone right back into their terrorist organizations and a couple have worked their way up into the leadership of ISIS

You better hope you are never in a place where you deserve mercy for acting beyond your control. If you have no compassion, you are the same as those we fight.

Im not saying he should get the firing squad.
But that do nothing slap on the wrist is a joke.
If he has mental issues. Then he should be in a mental hospital.
Least he goes out and starts shoting people.

The UCMJ is Draconian in its implementation. I am really surprised he got the verdict he did.

I will never desert my brothers and sisters in arms. EVER. Nor will I betray this country. He is a traitor, and a coward and deserves to hang for it. I know you've never served. Which is fine, I don't think less of those that don't serve. But those that haven't served will never be able to understand what his actions caused, nor will they ever understand what bonds and principles he destroyed with his actions. So I'm just gonna leave it at that for the evening. This dude getting off Scott free has me seeing red so I need to get my mind elsewhere. Talk to you all tomorrow

You can show compassion by sparing his life
You can show justice to those who laid down thete lives for him by locking him up.

Well then, the entire group of founding fathers of the United States should have been executed. Do you really think doing so would have stopped our push for independence?

It has never worked, and never will. We must hold a higher ideal or the principles of this nation are lost.

That is a far different story as a new country was born. They fought for what they thought was a freedom. This guy sold his team out for whatever reasons. I am not saying execute him but to be scott free is wrong. ANd it seems the Judge did it because of his dislike for trump

The founding fathers laid there lives and their fortunes on the line for a cause.
Had they failed they would have been hung for treason.

It is refreshing thought to have a discussion without childish name calling and insults.

No, it's not. It was and still is the basis on which this Nation was founded. A "More perfect Union" where draconian execution of laws are not permitted nor is the tyranny of the majority...or public opinion on guilt or innocence leading to execution of punishments.

We have an independent judicial arm that hears cases and determines punishment. The mass public does not have, nor is entitled to the power of judgement...for damned good reason.
