Which street gear?

It really all depends on the use of the car. If it's strictly street then 3.55's are the norm but if you drag race it could be anything up to 4.56 or higher. It is usually a personal choice, the person's age sometimes is a deciding factor too.

my dart is a pretty much a dedicated drag car at this point, and i can tell you with a 26 or 28 inch tall drag slick, if i had 4.56's i would be DONE at 1/8 mile.

727, with 3.91 gears, 26 inch tall tires, and my 6800 RPM shift light is on at the 1000.

i voted 3.91's and i would not go numerically higher unless i had 29 or 30 inch tall tires.

3.91
67 Dart rear moved back 3/4" I run a 29" tire on the street, 2700 at 70 mph. Drive to track and swap on a 27" drag radial at the track. Works great.

I run 28 inch tall tires on the cuda. I had 3.91 gears when I was running the stock stroke 400, and decided to swap out to 3.23's when I built the stroker. I didn't like them and ended up with 3.55's which are just about perfect. I run 3000 rpm at 70 mph, and about 2200 at 50 mph. Granted I am running a 500 inch torque monster, so results with a 318 will be different.

Happy with my new 3.55's in my '67 Dart 383, but tires are 25" diameter. Not too revvy, just right. Not dragging it anyway, just 0-80 pulls.

I think 3.55's are the best all around gear for the street. My Dart is going to get 3.91's when I rebuild the rear end. It doesn't see the highway at all and I wanna hear that 340 scream.

P295/50R15 and 4.10 gears with a GM 200R4 overdrive transmission. 80 mph at 2800 rpm. This is the main reason I went overdrive with 4.10's. Before with the 904 I was 4000 rpm at 70 mph.

3.23 and a damn good converter, don't cheap out on the converter.
I have a 8.75 and a set extra set of 4.30 gears to remind me why to leave the 3.23 in the car.

See, now, that's the way to do it!

Now the equivalent gearing for 2700@70 and with a typical 275/50-15 tire @ 25.8 inches would be 2.97.
And by running a 3.23, that would be about 9% more gear for the teener. So.........3.23 wins again!
It would cruise around 2900@70 with a loc-up.

I swapped from 3:55 to 3:23, like it much better. Auto 904. 26 inch tire. MT

Great! Bring age into it!:finga::finga::finga:

Torque monsters like the taller gears on the street but get too tall and you will go up in smoke too easy at 60ft and it can get scary.

That's why I didn't vote. lol
My 1970 Duster 340 (new off the showroom floor) came with 3.23 open 8.75 diff.
It had E70-14's, prolly 25-26 inch diameter. It would burn or bog off the line, depending on how it was launched. It would do 138 MPH, according to the rallye pak gauge cluster.
Today, I have no interest in going 100+ in a 48 year old Dart GT w/383 TF 3.55 SG diff.
I voted 3.55 and it seems to be the most popular choice, according to the poll.

My calculator comes up with 115 mph. @ 5000 rpm. You should get your speedo checked. There's a reason why Ma Mopar used the 3.23 ratio in most of the performance cars they built. Because it's a great all around gear. Mopar engines are designed to produce a lot of torque and really don't need a lot of rpm to perform well or a big gear ratio.

I travel to shows and cruises up to 90 miles away. With a old car, gas mileage isn't a issue. It's all about the smiles per gallon, so a 2.76 ratio isn't needed but i don't need to rpm the engine to go 65 mph either.

Yeah my 70 Swinger340 buried the speedo too. And with 3.55s. That would be 6400 rpm. And with 3 screaming teenage boy passengers in there too! Me? I was trying to get the floor-mat off the gas pedal.
That car was close to the most ill-handling performance car I ever owned. Too much motor for the factory chassis, and too much car for a 17 year old, and most especially, too much everything for those E70s. G60s weren't much better.
By 73 there were no original powertrain parts left in her. Second engine, second diff, third tranny, second D/S, probly third alt, second starter, third clutch, second set of springs and shocks, second shifter, and something like 14 tires.Sheesh, what a money-pit.
Oh wait, the carb and intake were original.
I survived.

Great story AJ. That would be a great idea for a thread. Were those speed rated E70's? lol

A Cheech & Chong song comes to mind when thinking of those 14" tires.....
