Stroked 318 power

I just watched an episode of Nicks Garage where he dynoed a 318 stroked to 390ci. Factory cast iron exhaust manifolds, factory iron 587 heads, 750cfm (I think) carb & .425ish lift flat tappet hydraulic cam with 10.5 compression. It made just over 400 h.p. & 440lbs torque! Pretty good stuff.

it's not bad but if you look at the 380hp crate basically has the same power curve at the same rpms and that's just a 5.9l with cam headers and 4 bbl.

Granted but, the 318 output is still pretty impressive & more than likely, a lot less expensive to build. It's just pretty neat to see people make good power with 318s. I think they're overlooked a lot.

Saying that I'm not knocking the 318/390 it's a cool little build most be happy with especially with a set of headers, just thought if you were thinking about a 318/390, just letting you know you could get there basically with a 360, after that choice is yours.
 
This guy only builds small block strokers... this 390 did 535 hp... my plan in a few years is to make mine a 390.. maybe..

 
Food for thought: if the factory had used the same stroker crank your talking about in the 318 back then - would be still call it a stroker? And why didn’t the factory make a crank like that? They would had killed it at the horsepower wars of the late early 70’s. Emissions?

I'm not planning on building anything now. I'm spending my time & money on getting more power from my 2000 4.7 Dakota. I just though the 318 build was pretty cool.

Bet the trick flow heads helped a lot getting those torque numbers, this shop is actually a reasonable distance form me.

They did sell stroker cranks, my buddy was running them back in the late 70s in his duster.

Chrysler seemed to love Big bore's shorter strokes and long rods. They probably felt the 360/383/400 covered that need.

I guess with the manufacture the 8 to 80 rule applies. It’s about longevity no HP when it comes to the 318.
It was Ma MoPar’s tried and true workhorse. Good stuff right here.

How do you plan on more power? Not a whole lot in the name of performance parts for that little work horse.

I was watching a bunch of videos that this guy did (Martin built on YouTube) on how to add more power to the 4.7l. I know there's not a lot out there anymore for these engines but, he shows you how to modify & ad things to earlier (99-07) 4.7s & it's pretty good stuff. I was an auto mechanic for over 35 years, so I can relate to his upgrades. Check them out.
