what rear end does this sure grip fit? searched here and google and couldn't find anything that would help me id this one. it always led me to identifying the whole axle. once this is identified what would it be worth? it needs new bearings obviously but the inside looks good and rust free. has been stored inside so only the case looks dirty and it wipes off easily.

In the first picture I can see the letters "issued 5/30/81". Not sure about the year since I just got new glasses and I'm blind as a bat, but if that is the year it could only be a 7 1/4", 8 1/4", or 9 1/4" since those were the only axles in production that year. You may want to double check that. If the year is 61 it can only be an 8 3/4" cone type.
 
Lol dont feel bad, after reading that i went to double check and with it infront of me i had a hard time reading it. Im gonna say its a 61 but it is difficult to tell however there were minute differences between the 8 and 6 in the other numbers that make me say its a 61 cone type for an 8 3/4
 
No such thing as a cone style SG unit from 1961!! Cone style SG units didn't come out until the 69 model year!! However, the 8 3/4" rear didn't end production in trucks until 77 or 78 I believe, or maybe even later, and are most often found under 4WD trucks equipped with a Dana 44 axle up front with 3:54 gear ratio!! Could be a replacement unit, or from a truck!! Geof
 
So how do i figure out what it fits then? And anyone know what a fair price is for this?
Also thats just a patent issue date not a manufactured date. So is it possible they just sat on the patent for 8 years?
 
Maybe measure the diameter of the axle splines and report back. I'll check it against an A and B body one, and also a truck one and see if there's a difference. Geof
 
This is how I bring up numbers I am not sure of. Do you have some white spray paint? Other colors may work too but I haven't tried. If so put some on your finger, rub it across the date and then wipe off the excess. That is what worked to decode my fender tag by doing the back side since the front was rusty.

If that is an 81 could it be something else besides and 8 3/4?
 
Im still leaning towards it being a 61 im 95% positive. Used a sharpie and it brought out the numbers really well. It was 30 or 31 splines, it was hard to count lol
 
I think I remember all the cone style units having 61 date. Maybe patened in 1961? Someone on here that has one in front of them will chime in soon.

Thats what i was thinking. I could see a company coming up with an idea and patenting it until the machinery and tools became available to make it.
 
I dont see one anywhere, i searched the patent number but all i came up with was a description of it. I think auburn gear made them for several companies such as chrysler and chevy
 
Looks like an 8 3/4 to me. Count the splines (30) and measure the diameter if you can and measure the ring gear bolt diameter too. If you need, I can go measure one and let you know what it should be....and the only way to tell if it's good is to take it apart or try and see how hard it is to make it differentiate with a couple of axles.

heres the inside, other than a thorough cleaning and de-griming it would need shaved and shimmed. no rust in it just old gear oil thats turned into grease lol

The first pic is normal and I think the rest is ok....it's ok for machining it for sure. The spiders look good and so long as the cross shaft hasn't spun in it's bore, it should be good to go. I didn't see any chipped teeth and the cross shaft looks like it's ok. Do the spiders spin on it ok?
 
Spiders spin ok, shaft hasnt broken the antispin pin or whatever its called lol no chipped teeth either. Would clean very well
 
Kewl, I have never seen one dissambled before.
It's called an Auburn but it's really a Borg Warner Spin Resistant differential....ie a Sure Grip. You should see the guts of the Power Lock. It has clutch plates and much smaller spiders. Most like them better over the BW but I prefer the BW. Now if you want to talk about the Dana 60 Power Lock....looks the same as the 8 3/4 Power Lock but much bigger and much better! The 8 3/4 unit is on the right....
