I am sorry that your perception of North Carolina was tarnished by a few odd looks at some bar which, I might add, were more likely caused by a stray boogie on your cheek than by the skin tone of any of your companions, but, southern is not a synonym for racist. Honestly, did you ever think to check for a boogie?
As for the nascar thing, nascar isn't just some redneck past time here. Half the guys I know work for race teams. Their lives revolve around race season because it's their profession. The rest of us race fans, well, we just really like fast cars. :snakeman:
Oh, and I gotta know where it is you were that there was so much country music. I've been looking for a good country bar since I moved here and all I could find was some silly joint by the airport.

my complaint is people moving in because of how much they love it here then start changing it to suit them. Before long its what they left in the first place.

Like any state some parts are nice, some aren't. I live in Charlotte, but I'm from New York. Been here half my life though. I've been as deep country as Lancaster, SC. I hate country music with a passion but the rest I can live with 
There are a lot of people who are nice and represent the "southern hospitality" well, but there are a lot of pricks as well (like you would find anywhere else) I guess my major issue would just be the driving around here. Not sure what the issue is but I have been all over the U.S. and Charlotte has some of the WORST drivers i've EVER SEEN! That aside, beautiful long warm/hot seasons are great! Carolinas are nice, not a bad place to call home...

You aren't the only one. Where I am from they closed down the local race track because the people who moved in from up north and florida said it was too loud. So it got turned into a bicycle race track and a place for everyone in the city to walk their dog. Now half of the people in the city have dread locks and congregate at the "Drum circle" where they literally beat on drums for half of the night. Outsiders have changed a lot where I am from, we used to have a lot of small farms and large ones in the area, and a lot of tractor dealerships. Now there are virtually none. A few years ago someone tried to file a suit against a farmer for spreading manure on his fields because it stunk a little. The man had been farming for his whole life and never had a complaint until someone who "wanted to live in the country" moved in and tried to change the environment that he desired.

I live a stone's throw from Gardendale. When I was growing up "going into town" meant going to Gardendale. It is a nice, quiet little town.

I'm from Eastern NC (called the true "down east"). What is really interesting is visiting places like Harkers Island, Atlantic, Cedar Island, Stacey, Williston, and many of those coastal communities that still speak the " real old English." There are variances to the dialect by what community you live in. If you find an old fisherman from those area (they are becoming fewer and fewer), you really can be quite entertained and learn alot about a lifestyle that is quickly becoming lost to imported seafood.
To get a sense of what you may hear, press your teeth together, barely open your lips (don't move them except to say the "m") and try to say the following..."My Lawrd Hunny, Ain't I been mommicked tonite"... (which means, you have had a real rough afternoon).
