Ok heres the thing fresh 360 runs fine but has a constant ticking nose almost sounds like the valves need adjustment, but all are fine. But after adjusting for the second time on the 3rd time i noticed a lot of wear on all the push rods going through the head. seems to me that the push rods are to thick and are wearing against the head casting and cause the ticking nose. I'm using the stock 273 push rods and i'm not thinkin for going with a 5/16 push rod but i wanted to know if the stock push rods sole in Jeg's would work fine cup still that is. I'm lookin at the Comp cams push rod right now part number 249782116 but i thought the stock push rods where like 7.1 or something in that area. Well at least thats what i need any way form the comp cam pushrod length checker.

You say you are using the stock 273 rods ? I assume this is a mechanical cam ? What heads are you using ?

Ive had exhaust leaks around the exh manifold to cyl head sound like lifter ticks, maybe check to see if you burned thru your gaskets ?

....and double-check the exhaust cross-over for the intake manifold. This passage goes under the carb to help cold weather drivability. If the intake gasket leaks, you'll have a constant tick also.

Well i'm not exactly sure if there stock 273 push rods i ment to say stock 273 rockers. The length on the push rods seem right and thats y i used them. But they are rather thick push rods have to be 3/8 thick and i'm using the J heads stock 360 which have new valves, spring, guides, and stem seals installed. I purchased the push rods from a guy for 20 bucks after we verified they would fit length wise. Also i am running a hydr cam from comp cams pp274 if i remember correctly.

If you have a ticking sound and the pushrods are showing signs of wear on the side, you can do one of two things. Get thinner pushrods or drill out the pushrod holes in the head for clearance. I'd try stock thickness pushrods first, if the ones you have are 3/8" they are not stock. I've put stock pushrods through the rocker arm without bending them (if you're gonna shift at 8500 RPM don't miss). Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone and grumpuscreature lol i don't plan on shifting at 8500 i'm stickin to the 6000 rpm rang. 6000 rpm is a little safer for a mild performance build like mine. But i really thought these where stock 273 rods but i guess their not. But once again thanks i'll just order 5/16 rods the same length next week.

I just went through something similiar on my 360 with X heads which are virtually the same as your J heads and I have Comp cams adjustable rockers. In their literature that came with the rocker arms it said to use their part # 7821 pushrods if your running a hyd. cam and 7822 if your running a solid cam. I'm running a hyd. cam so I ordered the 7821's. The only difference is the 7822's are .108" longer. Well when I put in the 7821's that they said to use they were too short. I had enough adjustment to adjust it out but when I did it caused the pushrod to be off center towards the exhaust side (which I didn't notice at first). I ran it this way for about 1,000 miles and it constantly had valve train noise that I like you couldn't seem to adjust out. The other day I went to install new valve springs and that's when I noticed the pushrods were off center and when I pulled them out one fell apart. I ordered the longer pushrods and put them in and they are perfectly centered and now it don't have any valve train noise. Don't know if your problems the same but you may look into it.
