I am installing a new torque converter and want to make sure it is normal to hear a rattle noise in it prior to filling it with fluid. Is this normal?

I have never heard a rattle in one. I used to hang out with Rucker Massey when he cut them apart, and welded them back together, never heard a rattle.

You may already know that the turbine wheel, that is splined to the tranny input shaft, is slightly loose within the converter as is the stator. It will move around a little (has to have clearance) until everything is installed. I guess if you shake the converter you may hear a rattle but I'm usually pretty gentle with mine before installation and have never heard that..
