I was removing the dash pad on my 72 Dart the other day and noticed a lot of surface rust under there, like on the firewall. It doesnt look like deep rust ,,but like someone painted on a smooth layer of it..lol.I removed the heater air duct lines and glove box,,no radio , and removed the gauge cluster and have the heat controls just laying up in there ,,unbolted....My question is,,,whats the easiest way to tackle this problem, without taking everything out.Where there was sound insulation there was no rust ,,just the exposed metal has a layer of rust.,,,kinda wierd. Is there a product i can spray up in there ,,without having to worry about ohter componets being damaged.? How bout a light sandblasting...The whole interior is out pretty much,,so a mess from the media wouldnt be a problem...I dont think Im up for disasembling the whole under dash...

Rust-oleum made a product called metal saver rust reformer which they say converts rusty metal to a protected, paintable surface. I have a 8oz. container I picked up at a yard sale and it has a date of 1990 on it so I don't know if they still make it. They say to apply it with a pad or a brush. Might work for you. Also, can you tell me how to remove the dash pad? Is it fairly easy? I don't see any screws or bolts on mine but I haven't really gotten into yet.

To remove the dash pad I removed the guage cluster, glove box and liner and trim around where the radio goes...Then what really came in handy to see those dam little bolts was an inspection mirror and light.Helped me see and understand what the hell i had to do....

Didnt have to remove the windshield to just remove the Dash pad.But i do need to remove my windshield and my back glass.Hopefully I can get someone who is into Moaprs up here in Alaska to show me the way,or lend a hand.I want to paint the dash black and get a new dash pad .
