Using a Clay Bar

Any advice on do's/don't's when using a clay bar, or is it idiot resistant?


I need to do it to my car. Sooner than later..... :angry7:

wash the car good first. Did you buy a kit with the spray ? Mist the spray on and rub the bar back and forth till the paint feels smooth, small sections at a time. Kneed the clay often. Easy on body lines.
 
Do not drop it in the dirt, don't get any sand in it or it will make scratches. You will need to wax it when you are done too, results look nice
 
Thanks guys. I plan on blowing-off the car, rinsing it, THEN hand washing her. Then I'll tackle the clay bar and apply a nice paste wax.

I have washed the clay bar when it gets dirty in my kitchen sink using a small amount of dish soap and warm water. the dirt comes right off the clay bar and after rinsing the clay bar off and then spraying a little detailer spray on it and kneading it, it works like new again and stays clean.
 
No, The clay removes contaminants from the paint and makes it smooth. It will remove the wax.
 
Wash the car!!!

You need to get as much of the loose surface impurities off before hitting it with a bar.
 
Wash car with Dawn dish soap will remove some of the wax on car before you claybar.
my son washes car empties bucket then fills up with good grade carwash soap and water and uses soap with claybar works great he has been painting cars and now $ 300,000 and up boats for last 10 years at Nor-Tech Boats
 
We use soap and water for claying at work also. Just make sure the car and water are clean or you will scratch the car.

I would also wash it again after the clay bar is used, then dry and apply wax.

Here they are, I knew I took some pics :cheers: The one side is before, the other side has been rubbed out with the clay bar, then 2 coats of Turtle wax....not bad for original paint :toothy10:

Wash, clay bar, buff compound, wax cleaner.

The clay bar is amazing.

I also used it on my Yellow 70 340 car and it worked awesome.
 
Heres my before and after.

All original paint. Wash, Clay, Compound with Ardex 1500, Polish with Ardex Stereo Glaze, Wax with Mother paste wax.

My turn! Paint job finished in August of 2000 ... During and after.

Lots of work, but absolutely worth it.
 
They have different grades of clay, get the fine one. If it didn't come with a spray lubricant you can stuff like showroom shine, quick detail, etc all about the same stuff.....diluted, watered down silicone with some type of fragrance added in so the charge alot more than its worth :-D Like Adam said do small sections. Don't put alot of pressure on the clay since it is abraisive.
 
I just gave my daily driver Isuzu Rodeo it's bi-annual wash yesterday, followed with clay bar and wax. My wife asked what the clay bar was for, and I had her run her hand over the freshly washed fender. Then I had her run her hand over the hood that had already been clayed. NOW she understands! I use Meguiars Quik Detailer as the lubricant.
 
Clay bar? Sounds too much like gay bar. Do I have to have a Starbucks in hand while attempting this?
 
If you buy a clay bar kit it will come with a fine grade bar. I had some more aggressive ones at work, they went in the trash. I have also tried synthetic bars. Also junk.

That goes quadruple for the Seafoam snake oil.



But then again, my cars get DRIVEN.
