I’ve owned several A and B body Chryslers. All with small blocks. I just bought a superb condition, 2 owner 72 Scamp with a slant 6 with 60k original miles. I just returned from a 200 mile trip with that Scamp and averaged 28 miles per gallon !!!

Awe come on people- cut the OP some slack. It was down hill the whole way, tire pressure was at 40psi and the car was empty. They are just sharing.

According to AJ, that suck ***. His 11-1 - 367 cubes small block gets 32 mpg’s and does burn outs for a hundred feet, spins tires in second and chirps third.

Why back in the day, the government hosted a mpg contest. The slant 6 was always the winner. The best recorded mileage I remember the /6 getting was 34 or 36. Of course that’s a super tuned engine and a drive train to take advantage of it all in the lightest A body they could slam together.
 
They had similar trials here & the Slant won from memory. Not hard to see why..... The long runners on the Slant [a] improved low end tq & evened up the runner length. The two other contenders were the local Holden & Ferd inline sixes. The Ferd in particular was about as inefficient for power & economy as you can get......The intake manifold resembled a 2 .5 ft length of water pipe with runners running off at 90*.
 
mid 20s with 79 short bed 833od and idk gears, 4020 lbs, stock holley 1 bbl,stock electronic ignition, everything far as i know, when its cold dose lope a lil but if it ant stock it ant much more than stock! i got 2bbl and intake, split manifold for duel exhaust, and collecting parts for gm module mod but ol truck runs butter smooth, if it ant broke why mess it up?
 
Back in 79 I had a 225 /6 in a 71 Demon and the best I got was 18 mpg. We had 3 other /6's in the family and that was about what they all got.

I’m not exaggerating or telling tales. 27.8 miles per gallon averaging 60-70 mph. I would have not believed it myself had I not documented it. I traveled 78 miles and used 2.8 gallons each direction. I was assuming I would get 16-18 mpg. That’s why I documented everything to settle my curiosity.
 
Every one of these old cars is different, ignore the riff raff. I have a 318 Magnum out of a 95 pickup which I converted to carburetor, a 3-speed manual floor shift and an 8 1/4 with 2.71 gears in my 72 Valiant, driving 12 hours from Edmonton to Smithers BC I averaged 24 MPG.
 
Every one of these old cars is different, ignore the riff raff. I have a 318 Magnum out of a 95 pickup which I converted to carburetor, a 3-speed manual floor shift and an 8 1/4 with 2.71 gears in my 72 Valiant, driving 12 hours from Edmonton to Smithers BC I averaged 24 MPG.
Those Magnums are pretty efficient. (the 318's anyway) 2 barrel or 4 barrel? Most times the 4 barrels will get a tick better mileage if you keep your foot out of it. All depending on carbs of course.

Did you verify your speedometer reading was correct with GPS? If that was reading high it would have given false odometer readings as well. Also how did you measure fuel consumption?

Yup and all you ever see in these forums is how crappy the fuel distribution is on the slant 6 manifold. Yet, that was a huge engineering point from Chrysler. They hammered on how much better their manifolding was than the competition and they were right, IMO. The runner lengths are deceiving when viewed from the outside. You have to look where they branch off from the inside. Once you do that, you see how much closer to equal length they are. ......much closer than any of the competition of the day.

While I will certainly agree it is entirely possible to do it on one trip, that is not the correct way to figure fuel mileage. Fuel mileage is calculated over time with many different trips and then averaged together. You cannot just take one trip and decide you're getting 28MPG. That's not how it works.

What planet are you living on ? My average miles per gallon that particular trip was 27.8 miles per gallon. There are no exceptions or variables for that particular trip. That is how it works. Based on your philosophy. People can’t estimate fuel mileage accurately until a vehicle has 200k miles and is being crushed. I simply stated that I traveled 156 miles and that miles per gallon is a very good indication what the fuel mileage is for my car. Would other trips consume better or worst average miles per gallon ? Absolutely, more or less by a few miles per gallon
at the most. If you’re dissecting my outcome. To be honest the car is actually a little more economical than that outcome. As I traveled this trip over mountainous terrain. A lot of drifting. However, as much drifting as I did on this trip. I climbed just as many hills as I drifted down. And I took the same exact route returning. I’m willing to bet, if I were to travel a less mountainous route. I could easily hit 30 mpg traveling the same distance. I’m 47 years old, I know exactly how mpg variables come into play and I also understand more miles calculated would be a better indication. If any of you are calling me a liar. I’ll bet any of you, any amount of money. I can prove time and time again to average a minimum of 25 mpg regardless the circumstances.
 
2.76 gear most likely, and I bet the tires are a little taller than stock. Sounds reasonable to me. Non A/C car? Power Steering?
 
28 mpg would be nice, but my '73 340 w/ 2.71 gears, ps, pb, a/c getting 10 mpg...I have no complaints. Love all that power.

No, you cannot average ONE trip. It doesn't work that way. Go look at any window sticker. It states MPG as an average. That's always how it's been calculated. Go back and look at all the responses here. Mine was the one who called you a liar the LEAST and yet you go off on me? How bout screw you and the horse you rode in on? You just made the list.
