what 4 speed auto transmissions can i use? 46rh etc

In my other car I fit a 518 and had to cut the floor quite a bit.
But a friend fit one to his car and had no issues apart from the hammering mentioned before.
So I Just don't know. There is a step by step post on this forum showing a A500 fitting fine with just cross member mod.

So it's not tucked up in where a 727 would be?

The front of the transmission can't changed much ofcourse but it would be nice if the tailshaft could end up little bit higher. About 1" I recall. But that last inch will need more floormods.
If one doesn't 'bash and reshape' the tunnel, the trans will be hanging lower still.

The position of my 518 is good enough for the time being for my daily driving and handling.

Hey guys
Is there anyone in the mopar world who has a good name for building transmissions. I am not after a big dollar 1000hp trans but would like someone who knows mopar transmissions and there weaknesses and strengths well.

I have a a518 that has a shudder that comes in and out almost like it's timed.the shudder is very noticeable when driving but is also there while stationary with the revs up around 2000rpm. Because it's there in park that discounts the tail shaft and tyres etc. I had the engine balanced and it did not shudder on the engine dyno. My engine balance weight is on the flex plate and I have had the converter balanced twice. Still no luck. I have run the engine briefly with no exhaust to see if it's harmonics but still no good.
Could the fact that my transmission still has the lock up valve body in it but has a 2800 non lock up stall converter be causing me issues? Maybe the valve body needs mods to suit a non lock up converter.
Anyone know a place that specialises in valve body's I can call and ask.

Using an A500 transmission will need the same floor and crossmember alterations as with an A518.
The A500 transmission body itself may be smaller, but the flange to the OD is the same on both, and that's where the floor mods are needed.

You know they do look the same size in this picture. I have only ever seen the a518. Is the a500 definitely smaller as all the posts I have read on fitting these say they are definitely smaller and only need the cross member modified. But they look the same size

The main case is smaller, the OD dimensions are the same. So with the rear flange area of the main case being smaller, less modification is needed to make it fit.

Thanks for clearing that up. I really want the easier option of the a500 but I am not sure if it will handle the 550 to 600hp
I have phoned several transmission shops and some say no problem and others say no way.
I have also asked some guys using the 904s but same answer. Yes and no.
Anyone running a stock a500 behind bigger hp?

^Two words: overall cost.

Look, you see these guys out running an a904 in beast mode behind hot strokers; you can do that with a 42RH. It IS a a999, with a overdrive bolted to the back of it... Ever look on the Dodge diesel forums and they are running the overdrive section (which are the same on the 46rh version) on diesels with 800ft lb/tq with just adding a few well placed clutch and steel plates?

The only thing is: You can't use the lock-up input shaft, because half of it is hollow, you can press the old non lock-up in there and your fine. The direct drum spring is wound the right way AND they come 5 clutch stock; you can't use the A&A multi-spring, it doesn't fit.

You don't even need a full shift kit.... After 92 it has the better pump 'D' design.

Whatever you choose, get a good converter. This is the route I went and its been great on my 400ft/lb 360. A non-lock 95 with the updated pump design. PTC 4500 stall.

Did it all myself.

There is something I just don't get with this trans fitment. I know the a500 can fit with just cross member mods where the 518 needs floor mods. But looking at the pics above the front of the 518 is the same size as the 727. Looks identical. I know the 727 will fit so it must be the overdrive units that doesn't fit. However the overdrive unit on the 500 is identical to the 518 so in theory they should need the exact same mods. But it's well documented in posts that this is not the case. I don't get it

Can you explain the converter shaft lock / non lockup a bit more? In other words how do you eliminate the lockup converter?
