What is a good stall to go with a 3:23 Sure Grip?

-
i share the sentiment upthread in that's a whole bunch of bumpstick for 3.23's

that thing is gonna want 3.55's minimum and a fair amount of stall or it's gonna be dogwater downtown till it wakes up in the upper mid.

If it was mine, it'd get a tight converter that'd flash to 4200 with 4.10s, but I was tryin to be conservative. I wouldn't be conservative for "me". LOL

With all the variety of feedback I have received I clearly have a few decisions to make. The 3.23 are getting replaced is a def yes. After that we'll see.

I think somebody said what it is in this one already.
Yes. Me.

See post 59 with the specs, again.

And it is a pretty rowdy cam but not crazy. In the crate 402 I have you could run a 3.55 gear and 3000 pretty easily as a ‘compromise’ as the torque starts low and the line stays flat for pretty much the whole dyno pull. It will fry tires with a 3.23 and 2850 ish flash stall.

The 360 that the OP has won’t have as much torque as I do so he would benefit from more gear and converter like most are recommending.

I’m going to finalize on a 3000 converter and 3.73’s after trying 4.30, 4.10, 3.91, and 3.23’s (with Botha. 4000 and 3000 converter)

So it seems clear that I am swapping out to get better/higher gearing. I will replace the entire 3rd member instead of trying to change the actual ring/pion etc as i have read this is more difficult than my skills can handle. What are the recommends for manufacturers of these replacements? Who has had good experience with what?

Dr. Diff. Hands down.

With a little bit of patience you'll find a good third member with the gear ratio you're looking for. I've always had luck finding factory third members maybe I've been lucky they've all worked perfectly they are a very solid unit. At that point changing out a center chunk is pretty straightforward. They run around 5 hundred maybe a little more in my area. Just make sure it's a sure grip unit or you'll end up with a one wheel bandit.

Yes, but once these arrive in Canada with shipping tax and brokerage and our shitty exchange rate the cost will be near $3000.00. Yes 3 grand !! 1500 for the unit, 300-350 shipping and brokerage, 50% exchange rate!!, and 5% tax. It’s stupid.

BigB I may have some used and rebuilt units available from $1200-2000 cdn when the time comes

You gotta pay to play, no matter where you are. Maybe when yall become the 51st state that'll help some. LOL

Thanks 4M...TCS out in Langley will build me a brand new one to exact spec for $1595 so I will be most likely going with that. My only issue is that I need a core to send them and my 904 didn't have one when I got the car....so if you (or anyone on here) has a junk one they want out of their garage for under $100 please let me know.

Your 904 didn’t have one what? Are you talking about torque converters? If so I don’t think I’d ever ever pay $1595 for someone to rebuild a torque converter! Yikes.

We are talking differential Center section I think? Which by the way I doubt anyone would sell a core 742 or 489 case suregrip for $100.

That $1595, plus maybe 500 for a core (if you’re lucky) and shipping both ways will not be 1595 for long….. so essentially they are charging you $1595 for gears and bearing and labour? What’s actually included in that price? And what exactly were you talking about?

Sorry, yes I can see how my jumping between needs could be confusing. My bad.

1) No, I'm talking torque converter. TCS out of Langley BC specializes in building them based on specific application and engine spec. (www.tcsproducts.com) Go have a look and see. They've been doing it for 60 years so they must be doing something right.

2) As for the diff section, yes I need one of those as well - Sure Grip with 355 gears, or 373 even, maybe. If you have one of those lying around I'd be interested in knowing how much there too.

That’s what I was talking about. Diff Center sections from 1200-2000 depending.

Yes tcs is good. $1600 good for a converter on a street driven cruiser? I don’t think I’d do that, but maybe that’s just me

I am happy to take other recommends for a new converter. These guys are in Canada and have a good rep. That being said, that is expensive as you state....and so I am happily willing to let someone tell me about a good B&M or other brand that will do the trick as well for less $$
