What's missing? 727 BB

What is missing from my 727 trans? this is the way I got it. I know it didn't have a valve body. I got this trans this away I didn't take it apart.

Looks to me like the hard parts are there. Hard to tell. Few small things come to mind are all the servos in? also the band struts, kickdown lever, bolts for pump, thrust washers im not seeing those either.

I think I need to get another 727 the pictures are all I got.
 
There is a drum still in the case at the tailshaft but I don't know what it is. There is a lot missing. I was hoping to figure out what is gone and look for the parts to replace it. It seems like it will be easier to find another 727 for a donor or a rebuildable trans.
 
Hi Rebel, I can't say for sure what all is missing but I do have some pictures in this thread that may help you out. I didn't notice if you had any of the servos or the accumulator in your pics.

If the low/reverse drum were in it you wouldn't be able to see the Sprague. You can clearly see the Sprague. For an experienced torqueflite guy it wouldn't be no deal acquiring what's needed to rebuild what you have but if your not real familiar with what's what on torqueflites you might be better off getting a complete core. They made some changes down through the years and if you use incompatible parts it may bolt up but it won't work.

I forgot to ask how to tell what year the trans is?

There's a flat machined area right above the pan rail on the drivers side. There'll be 2 sets of #'s there. The 7 digit set of numbers that starts out with 2 letters such as "pk" will tell you what year it is.

next 7 [4431552] is the part number, in this case A727
next 4 [9988] is the date code calculated on a 10000 year calendar search the web for a calculator :)
next 4 [8395] this is the production sequence.

I'd also recommend a complete core for your first trans rebuild. All the parts will be mated. Just makes things easier. That said BB cores do not grow on trees. You can certainly get pretty much anything you're missing. The ASTG service manual is under $30. Also check out Wit Trans website. They have a nice 727 breakdown. Click on any part to see cost/availability.

Just make sure you know the exact year as the pump bushing changed for 1971. You'll see pre 70 kits & 71 up kits.

Check out the 727 book by Carl Munroe or there's supposed to be a real good DVD but haven't seen it. The book is invaluable as there's all the clearance & torque info as well as tons of pics.

Pretty close to what I found. Now I wonder what was the best year for a 727?
 
I like 71-73's the best. They had the wider front pump bushing that gives the front clutch pack more stability and old style front servo that shifted better. 74 and up are ok but they've got the new style load control front servo that I'm not crazy about but you can swap in the older servo from the one you have. In 76 they changed the output shaft spline angle so you gotta watch you don't mix in pre 76 rear planetaries with a 76 or later output shaft. They'll go on but will strip out under a light load. The front pump was also changed in 76 and requires a rear clutch carrier to match. They also changed the spline angle and pump again in the late 80's I think it was.

BTW: you could swap in a 71 style front pump and front clutch carrier to get the wider bushing.
