My 62 Valiant has a slant 6 and a 3 speed manual transmission and when I'm driving its hard to get it out of first. When I try it while parked it shifts freely, . I've tried shifting while holding the rpm up, matching rpm to road speed, letting rpm drop before trying, adjusting clutch pedal free play up-down, but nothing seems to work. Oil has been changed in it and that didn't help either.
Help!! :prayer:

Could it be something binding due to motor/ trans movement in the mounts? Seems to me it could be EITHER clutch or shift linkage doing so.

Does it grind when stopped going into reverse or 1st?

No binding/grinding when stationary, only when moving. I can't find anything that looks like it's binding, but I can't see it when I'm moving.

It is running when you try it just sitting, correct? no gear grind into 1st?
The clutch linkage is binding under the load ( go back to motor mounts, trans mount). Something is moving, to create the bind. Or, the disc gap is so close to needing adjustment.. What is the pedal free play?

Engine running, stationary, no grind bind in/out out of first or reverse.
Pedal free play is about 1.5"-2"

Take off the cover, have some one push the pedal down; see if you can slide a .030 feeler gauge between the disc and flywheel. if so, binding under load.

This is a column shift, right? I'd guess a mount/ movement problem.

Some of those toads were floor shifters weren't they? Is the transmission quiet when you let the clutch out in neutral? If there is any noise, you might have some worn main bearings that can allow the main shaft to move enough to cause a bind in the synchronizer. Those 3 speeds were famous for bad input bearings.

Hello, I'm with Cudamark........ I believe you have a worn synchro ring or slider, It seem's to me, if the pressure plate finger's are worn out, the tran's would grind when you are sitting still with car running, trying to shift from reverse to 1st gear. Are your clutch and pressure plate NEW? A few thing's to consider. Good Luck

Clutch/p.plate are new, column shift, quiet when in neutral sitting still. I thought it was nonsyncro first?
