When you pay $1200 for an AAR hood, you expect more from Stinger Fiberglass

-
To me, $1200 is a lot of money. So when I bought my AAR fiberglass hood, I expected it to arrive packed carefully in order to ensure a safe transit. Not the case. This is what you get with Stinger Fiberglass, along with chipped corners. Gee, who woulda guessed one piece of cardboard staples against another piece of cardboard wouldn’t hold up to a 2000 mile trip being tossed around by freighters?

That looks as if the resin and glass was not compacted properly in the corners. Voids/air bubbles are a manufacturing defect which can be easily avoided when proper layup techniques are FOLLOWED.

You are likely to have had to fix that whether or not the shipping container was properly made.

When you get glass parts, examine them closely with an awl or punch along all edges for voids and air bubbles. Dremel them out with tool tips like the first four on the bottom. When I get home, I will try to draw up some pictures and upload them so you can see how to will want to do the edges for better blending the surfaces between the glass and the filler putty/bondo.

Note, these tool tips are SMALL, the shank on these tools is 1/8".

If you scallop the edges of where you cut out material it's more difficult to see the repair line.

Do NOT rush the repair, no NOT start block sanding when the putty/bondo is still wet or uncured. patience is your friend. In fact, when you put the putty on, clean up your tools and go spend some time on FABO re-reading the My Luck thread. Once that's done, the bondo should be cured and you can block it. Don't get too aggressive on rounding the edges.

I ordered an A12 hood from Year One. I had the same issues. Poor packing and corners damaged. They also told me it would be easier for me to have it fixed. I said NO it would be easier if it was packaged better. Hood was just in a box and none of the corners were protected.

Well, that's a wrap. After Stinger replied to my Google review with no response to my emails, I sent yet another email, but this time, I had found a defect. When I installed the hood to test fit, I had noticed the driver side corner near the firewall had been repaired, but whoever repaired it didn't get the contour correct. I'm still waiting for low tension springs, so I had a towel temporarily placed under the hood in order to set it at its correct position. You can see the corner here with the unmatched contour and inconsistent thickness. This is their response:

"The owner has reviewed your pictures. There are many things that will change the fit of your hood. Just setting it in the hole will not give you a true and exact fit. Hood alignment bumpers/blocks, springs, hinges will allow you to make the proper adjustments needed. This is a aftermarket hood going on a 48-52 year old car. Adjustments are always needed and expected."

I requested to return the hood, and their reply was that I could return the hood, but I would pay shipping, and if they found no defects, I would not receive credit for the hood. They also stated if the hood sustained damage through shipping, I would not receive credit for the hood. I wasn't satisfied with that offer, so I offered a compromise of keeping the hood and having Stinger pay for the repairs and correction. They refused and stated they have been more than accommodating considering my nasty thread on FABO. Obviously, they are bitter and holding a grudge, and letting that get in the way of good customer service.

Man I'm sorry to read, you seem to be a level headed individual with way more patience than myself.

Thanks. I've said it before, I used to be quite a bit spicier back in the day. Years ago, I would've driven the hood to Florida and shoved it somewhere uncomfortable, but that kind of behavior got me in trouble. It has taken years and a lot of discipline to tame myself, and I think it's for the best. :D

not to hijack your thread but i purchased front and rear bumpers for a 68 dart from stinger last summer they were both put in the same box with no packing and they scratched each other up pretty bad. i thought that was the worst of it till i started prepping for paint.they had globed body putty on the bumpers to fix bad spots then sprayed some kind of cheap gray enamel to cover up the mess. what should have been a simple prep turned into a 20 hour job. never again would i buy anything from STINGER FIBERGLASS.

I’m sorry to hear about your experience, but I guess it makes me feel a little better that I’m not the only one.

This whole thing has just been ridiculous. I caint believe there are some here who think you should "just fix it" and move on. I know nothing about fiberglass.....but I do wonder if that back cornet could be heated gently with a heat gun and reshaped?

Agreed, it’s been a very unfortunate experience, but also a huge lesson learned.

About the repair, I know a guy who does body work on boats, so he’s pretty good with fiberglass. I just need to reach out to him to try and find out how much he’d charge to fix it. The boat has sailed on any possibility to have Stinger do it, and even per their return policy, I’d be out $300 just to return it. And that’s even if the part is defective, never mind damage incurred during shipping.

I joined this discussion late....but remember this ....telling us will make another person think twice before dealing with Stinger.

Nearly 58,000 members in FABO alone....some of these crossover to Joey's other sites.

Vendors would do themselves a favour to remember this when screwing a guy over for a few extra bucks in shipping costs, and care.

Sorry to read, make sure to leave a review for Stinger, I believe Righty Tighty did.
That will get additional traction.
Like KiwiGTX mentioned, some of these vendors underestimate the power of these forums.

I like this if the hood is damaged in transport in returning you will not receive credit ! I think they need to practice what they preach !

in the case of my bumper's the body putty they had spread and made a very bad attempt at sanding was to cover and fill in big voids and air bubbles in the resin.as for sending them back to repair, if someone sent that kinda work out i figure in there mind it was all good no way would i want that person to work on anything i owned

I heard some bad stories on fiberglass parts recently. I went with Glasstek . The quality is very nice on race and street parts. I sold my dish ragged AAR doors at Carlisle. and bought glasstek. I got the Frontend, Doors. Hood, Trunk, Dash, and rear bumper. It all came secured in a wooden crate. Very nice parts and great to deal with.

Wooden crates, the way all fiber glass body parts should be sent. Forget about the rest go with Glasstek, it seems like they got their act together.

Call the guy up again and make him aware of this thread and all of the attention it has gotten. Give him an opportunity to refund a portion of your payment to reimburse you for the time and effort to effect the repair. Let him know that if he treats you fairly, you'll update the thread accordingly.

He is aware of it. Just Google Stinger Fiberglass and read the review OP left and the response from Stinger. Apparently we are a bunch of degenerates on this forum.

I suppose the stinger guy is right put some resin on it and sand it but if you are a bolt it on and go guy you dont want to hear that....but its typical American know how today, noone wants to back anything resembling quality, its about getting paid not doing a good job...just check pout any servers at any restaurant, they all feel entitled to a good tip.
