when i bought my 74 scamp the previous owner had moved the battery to the trunk. black wire to frame rail and red goes up to the starter first then to starter relay? i dont know but that dont sound right? and battery wont stay charged? is this wired correctly?

I don't think it matters if the cable goes to the starter first as long as it connects to the relay Bat terminal and the starter terminal.
Have you disconnected the battery and see if it still goes dead after sitting.
It's entirely possible that you have a bad battery.
You could take it down to an Autozone or something and have it load tested.

You need to check the output of the alternator to see if you're charging. It should also be connected directly to the battery. Output voltage should be approx. 14.2 volts at a fast idle. If good you need to see if you have a current draw with everything off. To do this disconnect one battery terminal and put your ammeter in series between the battery post and the battery lead you just took off. It should read zero amps unless you have a radio which stores information in which case you'll get in the order of low milliamps at most. If you're pulling more current you'll need to find the load. Check for light bulbs still on (especially glove box light) and other circuits. Good luck.

If you have the starter and relay jumpered together, and the battery coming from the trunk hooked to EITHER one of these, then all the factory wiring should work

You MUST have a big ground jumper from the engine to the body, and the battery either grounded to the body in rear, or a separate battery NEG cable running up to transmission/ engine block

We need more details on how this is all wired??????

Are you using a disconnect?

2 or 4 terminal disconnect???

Are you using a "Ford" solenoid on the battery cable???

Details..............we can't "guess" how this is all hooked up until you tell us

red wire goes from batt to 2 terminal disconnect then to starter then to starter relay. black goes down to the frame. i have a braided line from block to frame.

So far as "will it function" that is all you should need. the battery, the starter, and starter relay must be tied together.

So far as NHRA, you should have bought a 4 terminal (DPST) switch.
