Hi - new here - about to purchase my first classic - 1970 Duster - the seller told me the paint colour originally ordered was Y6, however car arrived FJ6 from factory. Fender tag stamped Y6. Is there anyway / any where to confirm this story. We've been told (not by seller) that although rare - this did happen from time to time. Story continued that dealership then painted it to Y6 for customer. Next owner painted it back to FJ6. Were just trying to find as much history as possible.

Although I haven't personally seen it, others may have.

However, if it was originally bright green, it would be very unlikely that the dealer would perform a complete disassemby if repainting it gold. The factory green would probably be evident under the package tray, inside the upper trunk area etc.

Thank you !! That makes perfect sense (about dealer completely disassemble to repaint) So - I guess ultimately how (if possible) can i determine that this car indeed is a numbers matching car (as seller is advertising) - but indeed arrived from factory wrong colour from fender tag stamp?

Well numbers matching is a different category of checks to original paint. If the body numbers on a 1970 match the Vin on the dash, the VIN on the fendertag, and the VIN's on the motor and transmission then it is most likely correct.

The caveat is that the body numbers may have been transplanted onto a different body if the original one was deemed to difficult to repair.

Depending on the extent of the final restoration it may or may not be possible to know the color the factory painted the car if it differs from the tag. One body number is stamped into the rear package shelf metal just behind the driver side speaker cutout. If that portion has not ever been repainted, and it is the green, and the number matches the tag, that could document the color story.

If everything has been redone, and there are no traces of the original paint to prove it was green, then there really is no way to prove it.

Also there is a number on the radiator support and drivers side trunk drip rail. Like stated they could have been transplanted if someone took the time and made the effort. I doubt the seller is gonna pull the package tray to let you check. Then again, he might.

On 71 and 72 Demon /Duster there is no number on the trunk support. It is on the package tray. I am presuming this is true for 1970 Duster as well.

OP is asking how to verify sellers story on the color mixup from factory, and is probably using it to justify why the car is painted FJ6 currently. As many would consider this partial year, high impact color as more desirable than Y8 gold, the seller may be adding a premium to the price the car is being offered at. If the owner insists the story is true, then it is on them to validate their story. If not, the color is Y8 Gold as per the tag.

Also, as OP indicated that car is represented as numbers matching, it obviously is being sold at a price considerably higher than a non matching model, and it is important that the OP verifies the truthfulness of the claim. Rad supports are easy to swap out. In fact, swapping in the dash, drive train and rad support is not uncommon to "save" one of these. The rear package tray number is "harder" to switch out and would be a number I would insist on seeing if purchasing.

I kinda doubt it. Everybody wants to think their car is "special" or "one off" or some such but it's usually not true.
