WTF build thread...

They were never officially imported by Volkswagen. All of them that are in the states were brought in by private owners and a few limited private businesses that imported them for sales.
they are quite rare.
My father was into VW’s and v8 cars as well and would take me to shows and drags when I was young. I saw the notchback and fell in love. I told myself one day I’d own one and at 17 y/o I bought this one. All stock, blue, a nice Earl schieb paint job over tons of rust and bondo.
I spent the next year replacing rust and crashed panels and building a hot engine with a close ratio trans.
I’m 46 now and still own it.

We were lucky here in Canada, these were readily available and Im sure a lot of them ended up in the USA.

I lived close to a VW dealership growing up and I remember these plus the Cambacks and squarebacks.

Very cool cars!!

Are you new to Idaho ? Where is your machine shop ? Engine machine ?
I am looking forward to a ride ...lol
I live about 20 mins from you .

I’ve been in Idaho 2 years now and I love it here!
No neighbors to complain, no liberals to try to ban fun!
My shop is in Caldwell at the end of Main Street but I’m in the process of moving. We are in the process of building a 2000sqft shop on our property, it should be complete in spring.
I’m moving my machines to my garage for now and most the other stuff is going into storage.
I was a job shop and never really did much automotive but recently I’ve been researching the equipment and tooling necessary to at least start building/ refurbishing heads for now. It seems there is a void in the market for a good head remanufacturing business out here.
I live in Emmett, about 15 miles from firebird drag strip.
They just put in a banked dirt oval here in town and have plans for a 1.7 mile road course.
I grew up racing dirt bikes but had to give it up a few years ago due to a badly broken (destroyed) wrist. I still have the urge to race in my blood and need to fulfill that here shortly in one fashion or another!

when I get the valiant done, I’ll take you for a ride for sure, we better wear some depends though, don’t want to mess up the new seats!
Hahahahahah!

Well you are in hog heaven now ! A few minutes from Firebird Raceway and Little Gem Cycle Park ! Last Irode there a few years ago I got crossed up in a series ofwhoops while racing a Hare and Hound...ouch ! 3rd gear pinned !

Your current shop is real close to Dan Soran Racing

There is a 69 Roadrunner Conv and a 71 Challenger Conv within a mile or so of you ! As well as these Vettes and this 340 GTS. I was just up there this morning and at Northwest Motor Machine .

If you are going to be a commercial shop at your new location let me know and I will set you up for internet and Telecomm . We can save you some bucks and get you the best available connection vs calling Sparklight or Centurylink direct. And it will take some research for a location in the boonies...lol

Getting internet was of the utmost importance when we moved here, my fiancé is a loan processor and works from home. I’m not sure who she uses, I’ll ask her when I get home.

I am looking at a brand new Jericho 4 speed dog box.
I have always built engines, set up rear differentials and even built a few turbo 350’s and turbo 400’s but manual transmission gears and turbo applications are new to me.
I know turbos like a load and higher gears but actual internal transmission gears are “Greek” to me.

with a 3.55 rear end, how would these gears perform in my application? From my limited knowledge, it seems 1st is too low. Also, would 1:1 be a good final drive?

Any input will be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.

Earle

Should work great on the street but 1st to 2nd is apretty big jump for competative drag racing

Thank you for the reply.
It’s going to be a twin turbo pro touring road car set up for cornering, some fun drifting (yes it’s going to have a drift brake) and cruising to car shows, not much of a drag car, it’s a convertible and I don’t want to full cage it.

would 3.28 first be good for taking off quick off boost then second will add a big load and help build boost?

is 1:1 with 3:55’s a descent freeway cruiser with 27ish inch rear tires?
The calculator shows that going 80, my states speed limit on many highways, my RPM would be over 3500.

I’m thinking .64 final gear would be more freeway friendly.

The 3.28 will be great with 3.55s . You can idle around in first with ease .
3.55s and 27" tires will be fine upto 75 mph but I wouldnt want to spend a lot of time on Idaho freeways going 85+.
I took my 3.55s out and dropped to 3.23s because I hit the interstate often . But I have 25" tires.

I was toying with the idea of a lenco or Jericho dog box but will most likely go with a Tremic 5 speed and with overdrive like I originally planned.
I can get a killer deal on a brand new Jericho, maybe I could return the 3:55’s and run some 2.75’s.
What would be the drawback, if any, of running this combination?

I almost raced a friends 66 bug with a 2180 in it light to light with my 340 '65 Barracuda. He insisted there had to be $100 on it. I saw him take off and said nope. He was half the weight and more than half my HP. Maybe on a 1/4 mile but not a 1/8 mile like out lights were. Learn to say when....

alright!...alright!!...alright!!!....another great build with fresh ideas and what appears to be the skill set to match. I got my note pad ready.

I have a friend right down the road who loves VWs. He has two Karman Ghias. Ones stock and the other you best be ready if you pull up next to it. V8s included. I've seen it bounce off a 9500 red line. LOL

Good choice not racing that VW .
Back in the 70’s I was cruising around in my VW buggy and rolled up next to a new ‘Cuda at a light , I started out in second aggressively at the next 2 lights and it was on at the next light .
I slipped in 1st sidestepped the clutch pulled a wheely across the crosswalk bang shifted 2nd and was gone he was trying but gave up :)

And yes he is building a Mopar in this thread and mentioned VW and that is when this thread ran off the track after all who doesn’t like a bug .
