To throw another wrinkle into it all, '72 Dart Swinger 340 Specials got them as well (not just the Demons and Dart Sports). Although only 65 were made, period, they are the only Swingers that got them. They were factory installed and functional (as much as ma mopar ever let them breath on A bodies) and as you can see, when the gasket was removed, you can see the EV2 paint on the inside of the holes. There is only one restored example of these cars but of the 9 known to exist (still looking), they all came with the dual snorkel scoop. Here's a few pics of my '72 Swinger 340 Special after I pulled it out of the elements (it's very rough as you can see) but took these pics before it was stripped and bagged, ready for resto. Also, as you can see, there was a 340 badge on the scoop but that wasn't where the factory placed them - if you look down and just behind the hole for the front side markers and in front of the fender well, there are a couple holes where the factory place the 340 emblems. Anyway, just another interesting aspect of this whole Mopar thing we love, live and breath.

Here's the first ever, fully restored '72 Swinger 340 Special – it's one of the 7 known to exist from the Crosstown Motors batch (Edmonton, Alberta) – thanks Kevin.

Yes, do believe that's for Dusters – no scoops – any year, right? Only the Twister package was a scoop option offered. Now, Dodge's, looks like a few different applications happened and according to the string, after the 2 scoop '71's, the functional dual snorkel scoop (J54 order code) could be had in the '72 Demon, Mr Norm GSS hot rods and if you were Western Canadian and lucky enough to get your hands on one of the 60 or so 340 Specials, you had a cool functional scoop (as much as it was functional). Or, you could order one and have it dealer installed but it wouldn't be functional, just dress-up. For '73 and '74 Dart Sports, the dual snorkel scoop (J54 order code) could be had on factory cars or again, ordered separate and dealer installed for the look. The few Mr Norm GSS '73 cars probably got them(?). After that, it would have just been a dealer installed, non functional piece for '75 and '76, right? If that's correct, we'll just have to wait for another unknown Ma' Mopar scoop application (here or abroad) that someone knows about or stumbles onto - post it here...

Anyone here have a scoop they would like to sell in good condition? The ones at Year One were $225 at one time I thought. Now they are $285. Anyway, shot me a PM if you have one.

ok i have something for everyone to ponder. i don t mean to stir the pot, but.......... i read this HOLE thread (no pun intended), and i think there might be something you haven t caught. i just purchased a 72 demon 340 from the second owner. this car has the J54 hood package on it.(NO fresh air holes). i also know a guy who has a 72 J54 hooded car (No holes). there is one thing that i know these cars have in common. they both came with underhood insulation. this might be the whole reason that people are seeing both. i m not saying that it is for sure, but it does make sense. i have also seen 71 demons that have no fresh air holes in them but do have the scoops and are coded for them. i ve even seen an original MR. NORMS 71 gss demon that had the scoops, and the stripes, but no pinstripe around either stripe. and this car had 100% original paint and wasn t in bad shape. when it comes down to it,, i think the factory did a lot of strange things, and there s not always a reason for it. as far as the dusters not having scoops,, not sure. but i know i haven t seen very many with the scoop! whether they re legit or not. thanks mark

i know i shouldn't but hear goes......to me this is clearly a factory putting the wrong hood on and then putting the scoop on afterwards or the hood was sent out and then caught by the dealer and corrected before time of delivery. the fact it has underhood insulation makes me lean this way as the hoods would not have had this with the holes....this is why the parts book show 2 different hoods#'s 1 with the holes and 1 without.......

I have a NOS scoop still in the box, and I remember it originally had the hood gaskets with it. Anyway thought I would mention the part numbers on it starts out with a pentastar under that "3573698", then a FP in a circle then under that 3672605... Don't know if it helps anyone, just keeping the thread going.

Please continue pondering, stirring the pot and wondering what the heck did the factory do - or not do. Here's another possible one-off that has shown up and I don't know the full story, but here goes. Now, I know this isn't the dual snorkel scoop and hood but it's yet another twist to the scoop saga. This is the fender tag off of Daryl's '71 340 Swinger from the 40 Crosstown Motors batch (Edmonton) and as you can see, HOOD SCOOPS is printed on it. The few cars that got hood scoops had this stamped because most of the Edmonton cars came without. The 25 Crestview Regina cars all came with hood scoops so it wasn't indicated as on any other Mopar but these few (there's only 2 documented) that got the scoops had this from the factory. Has anyone seen this stamped on a tag? As far as I know, all the '72's came with the J54 hood/scoop but non are indicated - on the 4 broadcast sheets of the 7 documented survivors that exist - in the sport hood box.

That '71 340 Dart is a rare piece, on it's own, even seeing the E55 on a '71 Dart fender tag. These were special order cars, Chrysler Canada's version of COPO.

Yeah, they were pretty stripped down - right down to the rubber mat floors but boy could they scream! The much coveted Y39 special order code is pretty awesome too, kinda' adding to the COPO/Mr. Norm thing – and in fine Canadian fashion, we didn't say anything...

Hey Guys,

This is what we are looking for the Duster,Awsome looking pics and great info,BRIAN where did you get your aftermarket scoop from. Also Bryces engine sticks up out of engine compartment about 1 1/2" .Will this scoop work with his set-up? Edelbrock intake,750 carb,Mopar Performance air cleaner

Mr. Duster..you can buy the one via e-pay from a dealer in New Brunswick..i am told they are cheap and one person that a friend knows, returned his because the plastic was too thin..I e-mailed them with out much success.

I think a company like year one sell's them..

I just put a add in the parts wanted and I found a great one from a 72 duster in florida.

I was told that the undeside of the duster hood had all the places to drill ?

Is there supposded to be a gasket betwen the scoop and hood ?

The link someone sent for the hole gaskets took me to a blank screen..can anyone re up the link..

Thanks
Ian.

My 2 cents worth.....
Identifying your DART/DEMON Hood year of manufacture;
1970 and 1971 Hoods had the factory cut outs for the Dual Scoops only.
1972 Hoods had the factory cutouts for BOTH types of Scoops.

Later,
Bruce B.

Bruce,

Thanks for the info. Our car still has the factory insulation on the hood when we get it out of storage, I will carefully peal back the insulation and look for the marks.

Thanks,
Ian.
