I remember those days.
Start a few cars back from pump , tell people $10.00 limit pay now give them a yellow sticker on windshield, collect the money from about 15 cars and run like he'll before one with a sticker reached the pump.

Yhats around when I started in a gas station pumping gas. Man for a young kid dealing with a the assholes was a bit much.

I got hired at I think maybe 15 years old for pumping gas at a full service station. First thing manager asked me after I got hired was whether or not I smoked. In my mind I am thinking define smokes please? As I did not like cigarettes. Hah. Once it dawned on him I was contemplating my answer he bluntly asked do you carry a lighter. To which I answered no, I do not. He promptly handed me a bic out of his pocket and told me, anybody gives you Shi** pull the pump handle out and point it in their window and with bic in other hand, tell them to get off your lot. And never stand in between the pump island and the car as they can fling the car door open and knock you over, always stand on top of the island. I learned a lot from that old codger.

Who would think a guy would have to learn self defence as a pump jockey?

I was in NY growing up. Some pretty crazy characters back then. Had one guy that used to come in daily because he switched plates for even to odd etc. He I just made sure he tipped me I did not care. Oh yeah he ilved across the street from me also! I sold him the other plate!

So I have a deal in place to trade off my t bucket. With it sounding like I’m not gonna be able to get or keep the 1999 Cummins from my grandfather, decided to make a move. Trading it off for a 97 12 valve Cummins.

It was crazy back then fist fights, stabbings mosty because the lines were so long and people were just pissed off, half a day wait to get ten gallons of gas in a 70 Lincoln MKIV! Best were the hippies, used to tailgate party in the lines!

It was in the seventies and the oil embargo was in full swing. Gas theft was rampant. I learned later that his nephew was shot and killed by gas thief’s. At the same station.
A friend of mine had it down, had a van with a hole/hatch in the floor. He would park over the gas fills, open the tank fills at a station and use a electric fuel pump and fill up the van and drums with gas. He made some serious money and never got caught either did not show up when they dipped the tanks either!
