Got it out with no problem. Three medium taps with my mini sledge on the punch pictured and it shot right out. Then used my pickle fork as a lever and gently pushed the spline off the coupler. It slid right off. Thanks 67 and the rest of you guys for the replies. Pics.....

A buddy of mine just made this steering coupler split pin removal tool out of a tapered punch for me. The tip that locates in the inside of the split pin keeps the punch from slipping off. Should make removal and installation a whole lot easier.

yup, tap that roll pin out with a nail set or a punch. i had to get a few hard upward taps on the coupler to break it free.

There's a roll pin that holds the coupler to the steering box input shaft. Drive it out with the correct size roll pin punch and it should come off with a bit of persuasion.

You can also apply a little pressure to the coupler once the pin is out by tapping a pickle fork in between the coupler and the gearbox! It doesn't need to be slammed in there, just enough to apply force to the coupler while you pull the steering column out!
