I will have to look into that I had to replace my steering gear I removed the old one but the new one hasn't got here yet. I just removed the pin from the coupler with the splines in it. My coupler slides back and forth on the shaft is that normal?

    1974 Scamp some assembly required

I was thinking about that too. I wonder if it's long enough that you dont have to pound out the steering shaft in the column? I think drilling a hole all the way true and po putting a bolt thru would be the safest and easiest if you ever had to remove it again. If you weld it I can see it being...

Can steering gear worm seal be removed in car?

1966 Barracuda power steering. I'm rebuilding my steering coupler and totally removed the steering column so I could press out the pin to install the bottom seal. As I look through the firewall I can see directly into the worm seal gear. Can that seal be removed without pulling the steering...

all right here my hangup, I can't figure out how to get this steering coupler apart. From pics I gather I should stick a drift in the hole and drive a roll pin out the other side. Trouble is there's no exit on the other side, no sign of a roll pin in the hole, and the hoke is threaded. There was...

Coupler pin steering box help please.

Got it out with no problem. Three medium taps with my mini sledge on the punch pictured and it shot right out. Then used my pickle fork as a lever and gently pushed the spline off the coupler. It slid right off. Thanks 67 and the rest of you guys for the replies. Pics.....

    1969 Barracuda Fastback

Steering column rebuild: A while ago I purchased from a well-known FABO member a correct steering column for my Barracuda. The steering column was generally in good condition, all the plastic injections on the shaft and gearshift tube were intact. Compared to the tilt steering column with...

    Moog offset uca bushings

Kind of. The body of the connector connects to the gearbox on the splined shaft and is held in place with a roll pin. That isn't what usually has the play. The steering column has two shoes and a spring that mate into that coupler body. If those shoes are facing the wrong way it will cause major...

    Scary steering shaft/coupler failure!

Thank Folks! So much good stuff here, as usual. Also, Mattax’s links are absolute gold. The Hamtramck Registry thing is amazing! My steering shaft doesn’t have the dot on the shaft – I suppose it is possible that it is not the original shaft. And the coupler doesn’t have the small secondary...

You may have to "almost remove" the column, IE disconnect the column support and the flange at the floor, then just drive the pin out of the coupler at the box and work the coupler off the shaft There is a couple of ways to handle suspension. You can pull the tie rod ends and...

    Steering Coupler Removal

Hello, I'm trying to remove my steering coupler from my 1972 duster and having issues. I bought a Flaming River FR1506P steering coupler to hopefully help with some header clearance issues. I have already removed the roll pin that connects the coupler from the steering box. I've heard of a...

    Chinese made crap replacement parts

Chinese parts are like a product you buy that has Chinese directions written in English. (close, but not quite right) They didn't "give" us anything. "We" allowed it to take the toll it is taking by hoping it would just go away and not affect "our" re election.

    65 dodge dart

Well Gumby (the dude with two club hands) is gonna replace the upper bearing in the steering column while it's out, and it's out because when the car got here it had 1/2 round of play in the steering wheel! The 1/2 round of play will occur if there are no shoes, spring, seal, and retainer in...

    65 Barracuda daily driver

I haven't driven the car since I went up the Angeles Crest Highway. Like always you just want to replace the steering box and then that turns into rebuilding/ replacing every part that attaches to it, haha. First, I noticed the pitman arm was junk and soon thereafter I took the entire steering...

    steering coupler removal

I'm in the process of removing my steering box. Harbor Freight has a set of longer pin punches for $9 that I just picked up. Perfect for this job because they're long enough to drive it all the way through. A little oil on the pin and it drove out easy. I came at it from the top and blocked it...

Need Steering rebuild or just old car

You mean the coupler that has the roll-pin in it that you pound out and then the steering wheel is de-coupled? I looked at that. The entire shaft rotates tight with the wheel, so I don't think that's the issue. How hard was it to remove the steering box? Service manual instructions seem...

Finally,.... Slop in steering is gone

Finally got rid of the excess slop in my steering on the '67 Barracuda!! When I bought the car, there was a ton of slop (excessive play) in the steering. We're talking dangerous slop! I replaced all the front steering components and still had tons of slop. Replaced the steering gear with a Firm...

    pin stuck in steering coupling

I didn't have any trouble getting the pin out. The coupler was a different story. I had just enough room between the coupler and the box to get a ball joint removal fork, and it was still a ***** kitty! The good thing about the fork is that the slot in the middle fit right over the shaft, so...

    pin stuck in steering coupling

A buddy of mine just made this steering coupler split pin removal tool out of a tapered punch for me. The tip that locates in the inside of the split pin keeps the punch from slipping off. Should make removal and installation a whole lot easier.

    73 steering shaft to short

There is also about an inch of 'leeway' adjustment at the upper end of the column (as it attaches under the dash frame). IF the inner shaft has 'come loose' where the plastic holds it together, there is no reason that this (shaft) cannot continue to be used. If you wish, just line up the...

Need Steering rebuild or just old car

No,... That connection is splined and pinned, so that should be fine. The issue I had was with the other end of that connector, where the shaft goes into the connector body (See pic). If those shoes are in there the wrong way it can add to the amount of play.

    pin stuck in steering coupling

I remove a LOT of those, so I've seen it all. There are a lot of good suggestions above. PB Blaster is a MUST. I made my own tool by cutting off the head of a large Phillips screwdriver. It gives you a flat drive surface rather than a pointed punch which can spread the hollow roll pin as you hit...

    67 Dart steering coupler removal

I have the steering column out of the car with the coupler still attached to the shaft. My coupler does not look like it has the very small pin at the top of it that later years do. How do I remove the coupler? Thanks for any help.

    Steering column removal

yup, tap that roll pin out with a nail set or a punch. i had to get a few hard upward taps on the coupler to break it free.

    Steering column removal

There's a roll pin that holds the coupler to the steering box input shaft. Drive it out with the correct size roll pin punch and it should come off with a bit of persuasion.

    Steering column removal

You can also apply a little pressure to the coupler once the pin is out by tapping a pickle fork in between the coupler and the gearbox! It doesn't need to be slammed in there, just enough to apply force to the coupler while you pull the steering column out!
