318 Duster Rebuild - pros and cons of keeping matching numbers

The 400+ hp would have been fun when I was 19 - but I might have killed myself with that much power under the hood. :). Back then - the main reason why I went with the 318 3-speed instead of a 340 4-speed was because of insurance cost. The purchase price was not that much more - less than...

318 Duster Rebuild - pros and cons of keeping matching numbers

The engine runs great but it drips oil like crazy. It was rebuilt in about 1990 - approximately 70K miles ago. It has to come out for the restoration work and it only makes sense to me to spend the money necessary to get it fixed professionally while I’m already paying the labor to have it...

318 Duster Rebuild - pros and cons of keeping matching numbers

Hmmm. I’ve heard of such a person in Pensacola FL. I’ll have to look to see if I can find his contact info. He doesn’t pull engines - but I now have the opportunity to have it pulled as part of the upcoming restoration work.

318 Duster Rebuild - pros and cons of keeping matching numbers

Next question is which company out there has a good reputation for remanufacturing an engine. I just called a company called Jasper and got a quote - but then I looked at their ratings and they didn’t get good ratings from the Better Business Bureau.

318 Duster Rebuild - pros and cons of keeping matching numbers

Not getting good vibes vs local engine rebuilders. What might it cost to ship my existing block to a reputable company that could return it as a remanufactured engine?

318 Duster Rebuild - pros and cons of keeping matching numbers

My 71 Duster goes to the shop tomorrow for a fairly extensive restoration. I’ve had this car since new and I know that all major components are still matching numbers. My question is - does it really matter if I keep matching numbers or should I pursue the best solution for the engine...

Electric Power Steering conversion kit question

I think I saw that same thread but it seemed that he wasn’t finished. I asked him yesterday how it turned out but have not heard back yet.

Electric Power Steering conversion kit question

I have a 1971 Duster (318 with 3 speed manual) that is about to go to a restoration shop for some major body work, engine rebuild, AC, new front suspension, etc. I decided last week that I was willing to invest in power steering and I came across an electric steering conversion kit. I’m 73 and...

    Borgeson Power Steering Thoughts....

I’m wondering how this setup is coming along. I’m interested in finding more about the electric steering option. Yours is the only thing I’ve seen so far. I’m about to send my car to a restoration shop for some fairly major work and would like to decide if electric power steering is an option...

Where can I buy a reliable remanufactured 318 for 1971 Duster?

I’ve sprayed the engine area where the leak seems to be coming from (can’t see vs against firewall) and I will get my endoscope out to see if I can view the suspected area before I re-start the engine.

Where can I buy a reliable remanufactured 318 for 1971 Duster?

I’ve pulled the heads on this engine a couple of times - but the last time was about 30 years ago. Am I correct that I can get the intake manifold off without messing with the heads? For the record… I cleaned the engine a few months back and then took pictures looking for the source. I don’t...

Where can I buy a reliable remanufactured 318 for 1971 Duster?

I assure you that the VIN numbers will match. I had the engine rebuilt in 1988 by a shop near Panama City. It still runs great but it is dripping oil from an elusive source on the back side of the engine (and not the oil pressure sensor). Oil runs down the right side exhaust manifold. I...

Where can I buy a reliable remanufactured 318 for 1971 Duster?

Thanks … if you find a good lead that would be great. I’ve followed other leads and find the local people so backed up they can’t help anytime soon. The person in FWB with the best reputation won’t answer his phone and his office door is locked. That’s how easy it is to get a rebuild locally...

Where can I buy a reliable remanufactured 318 for 1971 Duster?

And it was new…. Paid just over $2700. Just a bit more than the $2100 I just spent to order seat covers that will be identical to the original seat covers.

Where can I buy a reliable remanufactured 318 for 1971 Duster?

No worry on me giving up the hobby. I’m pretty much married to this car. I bought it when I was 19, dated my wife in that car, and she fully supports us keeping the car up. I was close to having someone not too far from here do a restoration - but the cost came in about $15K over my threshold...

Where can I buy a reliable remanufactured 318 for 1971 Duster?

I see a lot of talk about Blueprint engines - but they don’t offer a 318 and I don’t want the complexity of changing anything. Clearances are really tight in the engine compartment and I just want a simple replacement for what I have. I’d prefer to have my engine rebuilt - but I live in FL...

Any lube that would stop front suspension squeaking?

OMG!! That sounds like a lot of hurdles to deal with a many opportunities to break things. This is more than I want to take on by myself - especially as it heats up here in FL. I’m waiting for an estimate to have several things done at once and I’ll probably add this one to the pile. The...

Any lube that would stop front suspension squeaking?

You sound like you’ve experienced the same thing. The squeaking is almost embarrasing - I’m assuming some of this can be heard outside the car. It seems to be coming from many sources and past efforts with spray lubricant have had very little effect.

Any lube that would stop front suspension squeaking?

Based on how loud it squeaks - I’d guess rubber on rubber but ….that’s just a guess.

Any lube that would stop front suspension squeaking?

I’ve never worked on this part of the car and I’m no longer a young man. If it needs a rebuild - is it something that a novice could do after buying the necessary parts? I realize that I’d need to have the car professionally aligned after doing this. I’m also wondering how many hours this...

Any lube that would stop front suspension squeaking?

I have a 1971 Duster. I had pretty much everything replaced in the front suspension about 25 years ago. I’ve driven very few miles since then but the years have led to loud squeaking from the front suspension. I’ve attempted WD-40 and silicone spray on the rubber parts/interfaces that I can...

Pls recommend source for full AC system for non-AC 1971 5.2 L Duster

Thanks everyone for your inputs. Sounds like all of you are using equipment from Classic Air. That helps and I’ll definitely search for a professional installer.

Pls recommend source for full AC system for non-AC 1971 5.2 L Duster

Years ago - I pulled out my old Sears under-dash AC system and I plan to have a new system installed from scratch. What design and source is recommended? The car, with a 318 came from the factory with no AC.

A-body armrest - stripped threads in door’s sheet metal

Thank you for the offer but, before you invest the effort, I’ll try one or two approaches that require less metal cutting and accuracy. I’ve experimented with JB cold weld epoxy combined with a small piece of steel mesh and I was unable to strip the thread using a screwdriver. I took delivery...

A-body armrest - stripped threads in door’s sheet metal

Sounds like a good solution but I’m not sure of the difficulty of getting the location correct. Apparently the clips I bought before removing the door panel were intended for the rectangular hole that you show.

A-body armrest - stripped threads in door’s sheet metal

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. The car I’m working on is a 1971 Duster. I’m sure that one of these techniques will take care of my problem. If I use Super-Cuba’s method I may try to reinforce the cut with JB Weld since I don’t have access to a welder. If that doesn’t hold - I’ll have...

A-body armrest - stripped threads in door’s sheet metal

I guess I’m being slow. If I understand you correctly - I’m to cut a slot above (and not touching) the oversized hole. If I insert a large screwdriver in the new slot - am I to push straight down on the screwdriver to elongate the slot & force material down into the existing hole?

A-body armrest - stripped threads in door’s sheet metal

I might add that a larger screw might do the job for the forward hole but rear hole might be too big for this to work.

A-body armrest - stripped threads in door’s sheet metal

Need suggestions vs enlarged holes in door panel sheet metal which won’t hold the arm rest. I ordered the clips in the picture but, with panel removed, I don’t see any way to keep clips in place on the back side of the metal. Back side of door’s sheet metal is very difficult to reach. Would...

    Repair of damaged PCB

I’d just make things worse if I tried to “improve” the solder job. See any harm in putting a drop of glue on the top center of the red wire to keep it in place?
